Hi! I am Arvin Jay Balonga Deniega from the Philippines! I am currently pursuing my Master's of Education at National Chung Cheng University . I am also an English language educator with a strong focus on reflective teaching, learner needs, and responsible AI integration. Guided by frameworks such as ADDIE, Nation’s Four Strands, and Vygotsky’s ZPD, I design scaffolded lessons that promote fluency, confidence, and authentic language use. I view AI as a collaborative tool rather than a replacement, ensuring that pedagogy, empathy, and professional judgment remain central to my practice.

Lesson 1: Airline Customer Service (Unit 7.1)

Focus: Polite spoken communication in service contexts; pragmatic competence & vocabulary retrieval

This lesson addressed students’ self-reported anxiety in spontaneous speaking and gaps in functional language (e.g., apologizing, offering help). Using a real-world scenario (airline complaint), learners progressed from analyzing authentic listening input (a passenger–staff dialogue) to upgrading informal utterances (“Sorry” → “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience”)—a scaffolded activity I designed to build pragmatic awareness without overwhelming cognitive load. The culminating timed role-play allowed low-stakes fluency practice in pairs. While ChatGPT provided the initial framework, I rejected its “debate” suggestion (too high-cognitive) and instead prioritized affective safety (Krashen’s Affective Filter) through modeling, wait time, and positive feedback. Homework (an incident report) extended writing practice using target vocabulary in a professional register.

Lesson 2: Generating and Presenting Ideas (Unit 7.4)

Focus: Academic speaking fluency, collaborative reasoning, and vocabulary activation

Designed to support graduate-level discourse, this lesson targeted students’ difficulty organizing and expressing ideas under time pressure. Grounded in Nation’s Four Strands, it balanced Language-Focused Learning (10 topic-related words), Meaning-Focused Input (manager’s script), and Fluency Development (repeated 60-second joint presentation). Key scaffolds—such as tiered output (1 idea first), sentence frames (“The reason behind this is…”), and note-use—were added to accommodate mixed confidence levels (ZPD calibration, Vygotsky). ChatGPT’s core fluency structure was accepted and adapted (e.g., extended timing, shared Google Doc), but I enhanced affective support by adding praise and light correction in the wrap-up. Student work (e.g., homework paragraph using brainstorm, summarize, contribute) confirmed improved productive vocabulary use.

Lesson 3: External “Thank You” Email (Unit 7.5)

Focus: Formal written & spoken communication; genre structure & lexical precision

Responding to learners’ need for professional writing skills (and weak email organization), this lesson explicitly taught the three-part structure (Opening–Details–Closing) of external thank-you emails—a high-utility task for academic and career contexts. I designed a “Beginning–Details–Closing” table (not in ChatGPT’s original suggestion) to reduce cognitive load and support accurate register use. Vocabulary (e.g., appreciated, smoothly, definitely) was practiced through guided sentence-building and personalized scenarios (e.g., missing registration at a seminar). The 1-minute spoken summary of the email bridged writing and speaking—addressing both productive skills simultaneously. ChatGPT assisted in sequencing and scaffolding, but I ensured alignment with learners’ real-world needs and proficiency (A2–B1), prioritizing clarity and confidence over linguistic complexity.
