Beginning in 2020 the State of Arkansas changed the sales tax laws that now include all for profit events even if sponsored by a non profit group.  There is an exemption for a very small number of charities, of which Amateur Radio is not one of.  In 2020 ARVARF tried everything we could think of to get out of paying sales tax on admissions and flea market table sales but we eventually had to pay nearly $1000 to the state.

Since we can't beat 'em, we have to join 'em.  As a result, we have had to increase the admission price to $10.00, with 88 cents of that amount being state and local sales tax.  For Flea Market tables, the rental price is $16.50 and includes state and local sales tax.

ARV Hamfest's responsibility does not end there.  We are required to provide the state tax people the names and addresses of everyone who intends to sell any merchandise at the Hamfest, new or used.  As a Flea Market seller, commercial or private, you will receive an envelope with a blank tax declaration form.  You will be required to complete the form, include a check for the sales tax collected from your sales, and return the envelope to ARV Hamfest by the end of the day.  Having said that, the amount of sales tax you declare is strictly between you and the State of Arkansas.  We suggest you be honest about it.  The state of Arkansas has a track record of following up with what they consider questionable submissions.  And if you don't turn in your envelope at the end of the Hamfest you WILL be hearing from them.
