DAY 1: WEBINAR
13 October 2021
COLLABORATION AND MULTI-STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT IN LANDSCAPE GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT IN AFRICA: LESSONS FROM PRACTICE
This webinar is grounded in the Special Issue on “Collaboration and Multi-Stakeholder Engagement in Landscape Governance and Management in Africa: Lessons from Practice“, published in the Land journal, which presents a global systematic review of the incorporation of indigenous knowledge in landscape approaches, and case study research from five African countries (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, and Madagascar), written by 56 authors from 29 organisations (including universities, research institutes, non-governmental and international organisations, and the private sector). Drawing on presentations of five selected papers, the aim of this webinar is to describe and collate key lessons from practice for supporting more resilient and equitable landscapes.
Objectives of the webinar
To learn from case studies from varied African landscapes that address how engagement with landscape actors has occurred, the approaches and tools being used, and the key opportunities and challenges in co-producing knowledge to ensure ongoing collaboration.
To summarise and discuss key and interrelated lessons from practice for supporting more resilient and equitable landscapes, that emerged from the cross-paper analysis of collaboration and multi-stakeholder engagement in landscape governance and management in Africa.
To discuss what has, or has not, worked in engagement and collaboration processes, what could be done better, and what practical lessons can be upscaled.
To set the grounding for a follow-up workshop aimed at co-identifying priorities for the development of a short course for practitioners and researchers on “How to engage landscape stakeholders?”.
Target audience
Researchers, practitioners and development partners with an interest in landscape governance and management to address development and environmental challenges in Africa.
DAY 2: WORKSHOP
22 October 2021
CO-DEFINING KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND METHODS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A "STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT FOR LANDSCAPE GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMNET" COURSE
Following on from the key lessons presented and discussed in the webinar “Collaboration and Multi-Stakeholder Engagement in Landscape Governance and Management in Africa: Lessons from Practice”, we acknowledge that the complex socio-economic and environmental challenges faced across African landscapes and people require the integration of several types of knowledge, which can only be achieved through effective engagement amongst multiple stakeholders. Lessons learnt show that there is a need for landscape researchers and practitioners to achieve new levels of engagement with stakeholders, with the aim to empower them to co-identify and take actions for supporting more resilient and equitable landscapes. This workshop aims to identify knowledge gaps and priority needs for the development of a short course that addresses these priorities through effective stakeholder engagement approaches and techniques.
Objectives of the workshop
To brainstorm existing knowledge gaps and the training needs required to develop the capacity of landscape researchers and stakeholders to identify, engage and collaborate with each other in landscape governance and management.
To co-define key objectives and learning outcomes for the development of a “stakeholder engagement for landscape governance and management” (online) short course aimed at addressing the identified gaps.
To sketch the content of the course and delivery mechanisms.
To outline a feasible timeline for development, the key partners to be involved, and the potential funding streams especially.
Target audience
Researchers, practitioners and development partners with interest / experience in methods for stakeholder engagement in landscape governance and management across Africa.
