Artist Statement:
In my artwork, I currently use a wide range of media to explore storytelling through capturing a moment. A large portion of my work is inspired by unique narratives and the people involved in creating them. I enjoy playing with imagery and symbolism, and I incorporate meaning in my works through intentional design. I create artwork because it is a tool that I can use to express complex emotions and create meaning through visual media. This is something that I bring into my teaching, as I believe that expression is at the heart of creation.
In the classroom:
One of my main goals as an educator is to teach students how to think openly and creatively. I encourage my students to push themselves in their art by exploring self expression and reflecting on their own experiences. In the classroom, I create an environment that centers on creativity, expression, independence, and safety. Ensuring that students are listened to and respected in the classroom is done through group activities and reflections, creating personal connections, as well as cycling displays of student work in and outside of the classroom. I make sure to engage with students in a positive and encouraging manner, with an emphasis on student choice. I actively use a mix of constructivist and active learning models through active demonstrations, guided practice, and "correct me" exercises. I emphasize inclusion in my classroom by having adaptable materials ready for students to use as they need, as well as ensuring that the classroom layout is accessible. In the classroom:
