The Art Vending Machine Project

ART-TO-GO: tiny artworks available for 5 CHF during the week of Art Basel

Refurbishing Retro Vending Machines: from Condoms to Artwork

We found two vintage condom vending machines that were no longer in use and decided to transform them into Art Vending Machines for the month of June - just in time for the infamous week of Art Basel.

We commissioned a Basel-based artist to repaint the machines, did a call for artists through TikTok and asked around in Basel for locations who'd be willing to host us.

Right now we're packing tiny boxes and finalizing the last details...
The launch party date is set and you're invited!

The Vending Machines

These vintage vending machines had a previous life of storing condoms - now they hold tiny artworks. The machines are fully mechanical and work without electricity. They are currently an artistic "work in progress" themselves and will be revealed during the week of Art Basel 2023.

The Painter: Eddie Hara

We worked with the Basel-based Indonesian artist Eddie Hara to give the art vending machines a new life. He is using his signature street art style to paint over them, whilst keeping the original sensual touch... During Art Basel his work will also be presented with at VOLTA Art Fair.

The 50 Participating Artists

Out of around 500 applications (to this tiktok video) 50 artists from around the world were chosen to exhibit their tiny art in the art vending machine. They usually work on bigger pieces and took the opportunity to create small versions of their art for this initiative. Find more information to each of the artists here.

The Curators

The project was brought to life by Art Museums of the World. What started off as a fun TikTok account is morphing into a digital content hub sharing stories about curators, collectors, creatives from around the world - with the aim of supporting both artists and art institutions connect with their audiences in on and offline settings.
