Crochet
Crochet is a "handicraft in which yarn is made up into a patterned fabric by looping yarn with a hooked needle" (Oxford Dictionary).
History: In 1829, the first crochet pattern was written by Mademoiselle Riego de la Branchardiere. The daughter of a French father and an Irish mother, she is known as the mother of crochet and said to be the creator of the Irish crochet style! At 18 she published her first book about fiber and needlework.
Overview: Crochet can make so many different designs, and objects, and the possibilities stretch as far as you want. You can make blankets out of plastic bags, an outfit out of yarn, and plushies out of string. With only a hook you can learn how to make presents for a birthday, something to make you warm, or even an outfit for fashion week. Crochet has so many possibilities! At the event if chosen to attend you will learn how to start crocheting things you can use in your everyday life.
Origami is "the Japanese art of folding paper into attractive shapes" (Oxford Dictionary).
History: Many studies insert that the literal meaning of origami is "fold" (ori or oru) and "paper" (gami or kami). The art of paper folding is enjoyed around the world as a pastime and is thought to have come from Japan, where it was originally used for decorative and ceremonial purposes. Paper origami, however, traces its origins back to China.
Overview: Origami can create many mechanisms and maneuvers. People use origami in designs all the way from making a crane to building a satellite. origami can also morph into a complex design! Origami can be used to create 3D models of animals, tools, food, and even images of nature such as trees. Origami opens so many opportunities for designs if you extend your imagination. At the event you will learn how to create a crane, dragon, and a cool hexagon that morphs into a ninja star out of paper.
Oil painting
Oil Painting is "a picture painted in oil paint" (Oxford dictionary).
History: Oil paintings dates back to around the 7th century CE, and have been developed profusely throughout the years. The first oil paintings recorded were murals painted by Buddhists in the 7th century CE. The Buddhists would use an early form of oil paint to paint on the walls of caves in Bamiyan, Afghanistan.
Overview: Oil Painting is a great way to challenge your imagination. The only limits that you have when you are painting are the ones you put on yourself. Oil paint was used by Europeans for painting statues and woodwork from at least the 12th century, but its common use for painted images began with Early Netherlandish painting in Northern Europe, and by the height of the Renaissance, oil painting techniques had almost completely replaced the use of egg tempera paints. At the event we will teach you different methods and texture to use throughout your creation.
Sculpting
Sculpting is "a work of art carried out in three dimensions" (Oxford dictionary).
History: Traditions of carving and casting emerged from the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean. The cultures of Egypt and Mesopotamia often created sculptures on a monumental scale. These sculptures related to religious life or functioned as a lasting memorial to the power of rulers.
Overview: Sculpting is a great way to use your hands and carefully craft anything your heart desires. To sculpt is to "shape or carve a figure out of a moldable or hard material". You could sculpt a figure of an ice cream cone or you could sculpt a bunny eating carrots. Artists who sculpt are called sculptors, and the work of art they make is called a sculpture. This is a great artform for a distraction if feeling overwhelmed, and at the event you will be taught different techniques on how to bring your image to life. At the event you will learn how to make cute figures, and techniques to use while you do it.
Sketching
Sketching is "a rough drawing or delineation of something, giving the outlines or prominent features without the detail, especially one intended to serve as the basis of a more finished picture, or to be used in its composition" (Oxford dictionary).
History: From the earliest known cave paintings, to detailed architectural schematics, the act of drawing for visual communication plays an invaluable role in the development of humanity.
Overview: Sketching helps take amazing ideas and inspiration and create something amazing. The evolution of the practice of sketching has been accompanied by modern day technology. Today people can take sketches and create advancements such as planes, described by lines and contours, before the same flat drawings were often used to build another three-dimensional object. Sketching can be used on a day to day basis even if you are bored in class, you can sketch in your notebook. At the event you will learn how to create different foundations for sketches.
Water Painting
Water painting is "paints that you mix with water, not oil, and use for painting pictures" (Oxford Dictionary).
History: Watercolor art dates back to the cave paintings of paleolithic Europe and has been used for manuscript illustration since at least Egyptian times, with particular prominence in the European Middle Ages. However, its continuous history as an art medium begins with the Renaissance
Overview: Water painting is so incredibly simple and all you need are paint brushes and a bucket of water! This strengthens gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, improves hand manipulation, and encourages creativity. In water painting you can never mess up, even if you just splash paint on your paper it always turns into something wonderful. The best part is it is made to go outside and inside the lines creating a cool effect, which you can see and learn if you attend!
Bracelet Weaving
Weaving is "a perform or behave in a way that is attractive or interesting, or that makes someone behave in a particular way" (Oxford Dictionary).
History: Weaving is one of the oldest crafts in history, dating back to at least 12,000 years ago during the Neolithic era. Before weaving became solely a textile craft, early humans weaved branches, twigs and other plant fibers to create threads for building homes, baskets and other necessary objects of utility.
Overview: Bracelet weaving is such a fun calming activity if you just need to calm down. You get a pattern and some string and just start braiding in cool ways. It can turn into an amazing accessory and is so fun to do. A real life example of bracelet weaving is if you ever caught yourself braiding your hair when you are nervous. It is a great way to take away nerves, and blow off some steam. At the event you will learn some fun patterns on how to create a cool bracelet effect.
