Rivers are often described as the veins of the earth, serving as the lifeblood of ecosystems around the world. Concerningly, rivers face diverse threats in the face of the climate crisis and evidence of degradation is already emerging.
This montage highlights the beauty of the human relationship with rivers before introducing the harsher reality of climate change and its impacts on riparian resources. For best quality, please select 1080p.

We often talk about what scenery will disappear, what buildings will get ruined, what animals will go extinct when it comes to climate change. But what sounds will leave our ears? Which new ones will we get used to?
Close your eyes and listen to the soundscapes of climate change.

“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Everyone is familiar with these historic words spoken by Neil Armstrong as the first man on the moon. The Space Race was an incredible time in American history, where innovation and exploration became a priority after JFK’s speech in 1962, calling for Americans to reach the next frontier. Within the end of the decade, not only had America been successful in being the first country to reach the moon, but during this time, NASA’s budget increased from $22 million to $57 million dollars to make this great achievement possible. The space race is just one example of how incorporating the American ‘right’ of finding the ‘next frontier’ has led to passionate American pride, exceptionalism, and want to achieve the ‘impossible’ by taking on the next great American challenge. And in taking this idea, we can frame combating climate change as the next great American challenge.

Closing our eyes
As the world slowly dies
But if we don't devise a plan
To stop our demise
Bees will lose their hives
Temperatures will rise (and sea levels)
Of water we'll be deprived
Soon no one will be alive
Forget humanity thriving
We'll be struggling, barely surviving
It shouldn't be surprising
That apocalyptic doom is arriving
They've tried to emphasize
How the future is jeopardized
But we'll never not modernize
Bow down to large enterprise
Doesn't take a genius to realize
That our actions have been unwise
Some pretended it was contrived
And now we will all writhe
On the ground, agonizing
With no hope of reviving
The planet we've called home
The only place we've ever known
On which we will no longer roam
Will be an utter dead zone
Humans have been dethroned
Doubt of what's to come has been sown
Of every species we're alone
In destroying so much of what's grown

Imagine… one species going extinct about every five minutes
Imagine… the rate of extinction being 10,000 times higher than average
Imagine… carbon dioxide levels being the highest they have ever been in 650,000 years
Imagine… the global temperature increasing to 1.9 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880

Imagine… the ice sheets losing 427 gigatons per year
Imagine… the sea level rising 7 inches over the past 100 years
Imagine… ocean temperatures being the warmest on record
Imagine… the Great Barrier Reef having the most widespread bleaching event on record
Imagine… an increase in extreme weather events
Imagine… an incoming megadrought that could be the worst one in 1,200 years
Imagine… an increase in category 4 and 5 hurricanes
Imagine… winter storms increasing in frequency and intensity
Imagine… the number of heat waves increasing
Imagine… people leaving their homes because of drought, sea level rise, fires, and storms
Imagine… them being called climate refugees
Imagine… the world with climate change
Imagine no more…
Because this is reality
