Bettina Semmer
Bettina Semmer ha studiato pittura con alcuni dei più grandi maestri del dopo-guerra, come Sigmar Polke e Gerhard Richter, ed è una delle poche donne ad essere annoverata nel gruppo dei Neue Wilde, la pittura irriverente, acida e violenta degli anni ottanta tedeschi. La sua ricerca pittorica, di chiaro impianto post-figurativo, si è però concentrata su temi sempre più politici, legati all’identità e al gender, mettendo in discussione i valori consolidati del controllo, dell’autenticità e del cosiddetto “genio artistico”. Alla pratica della pittura accompagna l’uso della video arte, l’intervento in spazio pubblico (dalla Germania – Potsdam – fino al West Sahara), e le collaborazioni che includono spesso passanti o bambini.
Bettina Semmer studied painting with some of the greatest post-war masters, such as Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter, and is one of the few women to be included in the Neue Wilde group, the irreverent, acidic and violent painting of the German eighties. Her pictorial research, with a clear post-figurative structure, however, focused on increasingly political issues, related to identity and gender, questioning the consolidated values of control, authenticity, of the so-called "artistic genius". Her painterly practice is accompanied by the use of film, interventions in public space (from Germany - Potsdam - to Western Sahara), and colaborations, involving children and passers-by.
