Setting the standard for rights based beekeeping
GUIDING PRINCIPLE
A Rights based approach to Beekeeping
At the Artisan Beekeeping Collective, bee rights and welfare define how beekeeping is carried out. Beekeeping is grounded in stewardship, with responsibility for maintaining the conditions required for colonies to persist and function over time.
We work to protect and restore healthy, stable colonies and the ecosystems all pollinators depend on, while advancing wider recognition of this approach in how land is managed.
Core Aims of the Collective
BEE RIGHTS & WELFARE
Beekeepers must ensure the conditions required for healthy, stable colonies. Including managing colony health, providing adequate and diverse forage, maintaining hives, and ensuring ample winter stores. These conditions prevent harm, stress and depletion, and allow colonies to persist and function over time.
ETHICAL STEWARDSHIP
Members act in a custodial role, with work carried out with care and restraint. This includes acting only where necessary, making decisions in the interest of the colony, not convenience or gain. A consistent and responsible approach to all aspects of management. The integrity of the colony is maintained in all decisions.
ECOLOGICAL REGENERATION
Members contribute actively to the restoration of the landscapes their colonies depend on. Including: improving forage and habitat, for wild pollinators through individual practice and as part of the Collective. The Collective does not support approaches that damage or reduce the quality of these landscapes.
RIGHTS BASED PRACTICE
Bee rights guide how beekeeping is defined and assessed within the Collective. They are applied with consideration for all pollinators, both managed and wild. They inform how we engage with wider issues relating to land use, policy, and the conditions in which pollinators live and change over time.
