CURATORIAL STATEMENT
This exhibition will examine artificial intelligence as a new species and how it marks the next stage of evolution depicted through multimedia artworks. My exhibition will play out like an art gallery. Four films and various other multimedia artifacts will be laid out in an order that progressively leads to a reveal of my theme. The artworks will portray the evolution of artificial intelligence through the lens of darwinism and his theories of biological evolution and natural selection. The gallery aims to offer a new perspective on artificial intelligence not as a mere tool, but as its own species. The artificial species. I chose the medium of moving images as it is one of the only mediums that are multi-layered. I can intertwine the image and sound to create an immersive experience and a space for further reflection. FIlms can convey that immersive experience. Homo Sapiens, as a species, have started seeking convenience and comfort. For the most part, we are no longer challenged by our environment. One can make the argument that our evolution is declining. The theme of evolution is particularly important as we have artificially created a species that poses the potential to dominate over us. Darwin’s theory of natural selection suggests that homo sapiens are starting to lose the ability to change and adapt, whereas artificial intelligence is constantly changing and adapting. My exhibition might incite deep reflection within the audience, as it tackles the topic of artificial intelligence from a unique perspective. Grasping the difficult reality of a new species possessing the potential to surpass us might lead to a heightened awareness of our position vis-à- vis this fast-growing tech.
