Thank you for installing Article Assistant ("the Extension"). Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy is intended to explain what data the Extension handles and how that data is used.
We, the developers of Article Assistant, do not have our own servers, and we do not collect, store, or transmit any of your personal data. The Extension is designed to operate entirely between your browser and the Google Gemini API.
The Extension handles the following types of data to function:
Google Gemini API Key: To power its AI features, you must provide your own Google Gemini API key. This key is stored exclusively on your local computer using the chrome.storage.local API. It is only used to make requests directly from your browser to the Google Generative Language API endpoints and is never sent to us.
Web Page, PDF, and YouTube Content: When you activate the extension, it processes the content of the page you are currently viewing. This data is held temporarily in your browser's session storage (chrome.storage.session) and is sent directly to the Google Gemini API to generate summaries, chat responses, and fact-check reports. This content is discarded when you close the extension popup or browser session and is never stored permanently by the Extension.
User Settings: The Extension stores your preferences, such as your chosen theme, text size, and text-to-speech voice/speed settings. This information is saved on your local computer using the chrome.storage.local API and does not leave your browser.
Your data is used solely to provide the core functionality of the Extension:
Your Gemini API Key is used to authenticate your requests with Google's API.
The page content is used as the context for the AI to perform the tasks you request (summarize, chat, fact-check).
Your settings are used only to customize the user interface and experience of the Extension.
Article Assistant acts as a client for the Google Generative Language API. All AI-powered data processing is performed by this third-party service. Your use of the Extension's features is therefore also subject to Google's own policies. We strongly recommend you review them:

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the Extension's functionality or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons.
