The Benefits of Art
Creativity allows us to look at life in new ways. It gives us power and control, it helps us to understand ourselves and our world, it makes us playful, it helps us to relax, it keeps us motivated and it makes us resilient to life’s hardships.
Music, dance, art making, drama and other forms of art have shown to have an incredibly significant and positive effect on the human population. Art has been a part of our human cultural heritage It was used to improve the quality of life, to show and to tell the stories of the people. Art embellishes, it depicts, it reveals, it transforms. It provides a mirror to the self, but outside the self, to share with others. It awakens the senses. It makes us look again, and it makes us think. It provides a record of a feeling of experience. It is both permanent and changing. For these reasons, the creative arts therapies can be a more gentle approach to healing trauma, as it allows for expression without having to use words. It helps to prevent re-traumatization by grounding the experience, literally, contained by the edges of a piece of paper. It allows a person to draw or paint or express both the light and the dark. It brings up psychic material from the sub and unconscious, things you hadn’t thought about or noticed, but there they are, in the art. It helps to see and understand oneself.
