Note before you start!
Do not fall into the habit of always designing on the computer. You need to think this out and do some rough sketches to layout the design. These require a great deal of prior thought, research, and design to be successful. Remember these will make excellent portfolio pieces so do a good job! The due date is on the calendar so you will have to manage your time carefully. PLAN AHEAD!!!!!
I will grade them on production, timeliness, presentation, completion, and design.
The project MUST be accompanied by- (use this as a checklist!)
1-a design package including a project definition (typed),
2-references used for research (typed),
3-brainstorming (keyword outline/map/cloud),
4-at least 15 thumbnails,
5-3-5 roughs well sketched (and here) or computer produced and put together in a single PDF.
I MUST SEE YOUR ROUGHS beforehand so we can discuss your concepts!!
Put your last name on the file, no other info necessary.
Place PDF exported at 150-200ppi on the server.
Final Project-Photoshop
I must see your ideas sketched out before you start!! (part of the completion grade). The design process as outlined in the previous page must also be included. Note: You MUST write an additional paragraph describing what your research told you about the type of movie poster as far as the particular elements particular to the type of movie genre you select. In other words, describe what makes a comedy movie poster look like a comedy movie poster as far as type, composition, color palette, figures, background, and any other attributes, design or otherwise, that go into that particular type of movie poster. Include this with your brief.
Movie Poster
Brief: Pick a theme such as Drama, Sci-Fi, Horror, Romantic, Action, or Comedy and develop an idea for a movie including title, characters, setting, etc. Do not use real name stars or their images but you may “take off” of a name star (Brat Pit for example) Come up with something original. You may use stock photos from creative commons for environment and other background secondary stuff but the main visuals need to be original photos or illustration. (no “Google” images!!). Research movie posters to see what all goes into them. (Basically they are cool looking collages.) Use any of the tools in your arsenal such as text effects, photo illustration, etc. Do a professional job!!! Produce at 11 * 17 vertical/portrait.
Key Points:
Use all of the tools you have learned in Photoshop.
You may bring in the text or vector shapes from Illustrator.
Once you decide on a theme, study the genre (and time period if applicable) of the posters and make note about what makes them different in style from other genres (romance, horror, action, etc.)
Add other supporting info to make it look like a real movie poster.
The titling is important as it acts as branding for the movie so be careful to design it so it has its own impact.
Take time to pick out color (Adobe Kuler) and text to go with the mood/genre of the poster.
Other Notes:
This needs to be mounted on black mat/foam core board. Make sure you leave a border of at least 1.5".
When you show your sketches, you must pitch the name and plot of the movie in a short typed write-up.
You will also need the design write-up as before. Keep in mind this project has the potential for hi-impact portfolio pieces. Also keep in mind time goes by fast so begin to design now.
Any questions I will be glad to help, you can catch me by email.
Midterm Project
In this assignment, students will work to develop a concept for a food truck. The type of food truck should be something not already common so stay away from bar-b-cue, regular seafood, regular pizza...pick food that is highly unusual and not typically done. The farther "out there" the better. BE CREATIVE!!!
Students will need to brainstorm, sketch, and create a finished project that includes:
a logo,
menu,
and food truck wrap (use the truck template located below). Students can use the attached template for the truck wrap to create a mock-up of their food truck design. Adobe Illustrator must be used for all of this.
Here is a link to the intro/lesson guide
3-5 rough concept sketches will need to be presented next week.
_______________
Logo
Must be COMPLETELY original. If you wish to have a food truck icon, find a pic of a food truck and pen trace. Use same technique on any other shapes/symbols. Do not use the readily available clip art!! Note: does not have to have a food truck in logo...see examples.
Make sure type is well selected and matches the concept.
Most food truck logos tend to be badge-type logos, do your research!
_______________
Menu
Most food truck menus are front only. MAKE UP YOUR OWN FOOD & PRICES to reflect the overall concept. Examples here. Type selection and use (bold, regular, italic, etc. and type rank) is super important! Have fun with this!
_______________
Truck Wrap
Must be fully illustrated, see examples above.
Must look like it's ACTUALLY ON the truck, you should still be able to see details of truck. One side, create lines for serving area.
No Photoshop...all Illustrator!
_______________
Final Presentation
Present everything on a single 11 x 17 page. It can be vertical or horizontal (portrait or landscape). Must have title and any supporting text.
Here is a link to design presentation examples
Include a color palette of 5 colors and a brief explanation as to why you choose these colors.
The typefaces used and and a brief explanation as to why you choose these particular ones.
Must be printed (at RU Printing or other) professionally, and mounted on foam core or black mat board per instructions in class.
A written Design Process (PDF) will accompany per instructions given in class.
This has a ton of potential to be a portfolio piece so don't skimp on ANY part of it and start brainstorming and gathering inspiration immediately.
