"Doubt Me" (2021)

“Doubt Me” is a digital artwork stemming from the theme of enduring self-doubt and negative thoughts. It is a GIF that flashes four different styles of the same self-portrait. Throughout my 1^st year of university, I spent most days inside my room interning at a visual design agency and attending online classes that are 11 hours behind. I essentially conducted my daily routine in two opposing time zones that led to constant exhaustion, stress, and sometimes anxiety. Every day seems the same, but I always have to figure out different ways to cope with the immobilizing frustration. Each of the portrait styles represents the different ways I’ve reacted and coped with the situation that I had struggled to accept.

Recent works:

"Tiger New Year" (February 2022)

A digital self-portrait to celebrate the year of the tiger. I experimented with a more stylized style and a stronger colour contrasts to convey a distinct mood.

"Saturday Mishap" (May 2022)

As part of an ongoing self-portrait series, I picture myself in different scenarios based on movies, TV series, and games. This one is inspired by the Marvel series, "Moon Knight." I mistakenly thought a Saturday was a Sunday to the extent that I walked to church only to find it was closed. In other words, this self-portrait reflects my way-too-often confusion.

IB High School Projects:

"Mbo Batik" is the first oil painting and first artwork of my high school journey that captures my appreciation of the Indonesian Batik craft.

"Pastel Green" is the first artwork I created in lockdown when the pandemic first hit China, resulting in my closest attempt to a self-portrait at the time. The composition is based on a real photograph of me taken by a close friend.

"After Dinner" is another lockdown piece based on a photograph I took of a late evening sky after dinner, meant to capture tranquility and beauty among the stillness and emptiness during the pandemic.

"Frostings" is the second artwork that fits under the theme, Abstract Art. One of my most experimental endeavors as I used a frosting pipe to excrete the acrylic paint that soon dried to form fingerprint-like texture.

"Mother Mary" is a hyperrealistic piece of Giovanni Strazza's marble sculpture, "The Veiled Virgin". This piece reflects my reflection towards my Catholic beliefs and a form of catharsis while feeling the pressure in my senior year.

"Blurry Night" is an experimental piece where I took inspiration from South African artist, Philip Barlow, to paint a bokeh scene. I used a photo I took of blurred street lights outside an abandoned Asian Games stadium in Nansha, Guangzhou.

"Blue Box" is my first 3D installation where I sculpted a life-size sea turtle out of polystyrene that I place inside a box made out of blue acrylic panes with one month worth of trash that I have collected.

"A Partial Whole" is a mixed media piece that visualizes the contradictions I began to feel in planning future artworks. Whether it was art blocks or self-doubt, this was the first time I felt the significance of it in my art journey.

Personal Shenanigans:

"Patience" (January 2022)

A digital painting inspired by block printing techniques and artworks. These fishes are Indonesian species and are used in local dishes. They are called gurame, patin, bandeng, ekor kuning, gabus.
