Curitiba is the capital of Paraná state in southern Brazil. Known for its innovative urban planning, the city owes a huge part of that reputation to its 49 parks and wooded areas.
The main gateway for international tourists is Afonso Pena International Airport (CWB). The airport is located in the neighboring city of São José dos Pinhais, about 18 km (11 miles) from Curitiba's city center. Local taxi or Uber costs around R$35 (US$7) from CWB to the university's neighborhood.
It is also possible to travel by bus from other main Brazilian cities:
From São Paulo: The bus journey takes about 6-7 hours, with departures almost every hour.
From Rio de Janeiro: The trip is longer, taking approximately 13-16 hours.
From Florianópolis: A comfortable 4-5 hours ride.
The city has a cool climate relative to other Brazilian state capitals. However, an average of 26C (or 79F) is expected in February, when the conference takes place. A good idea is to always carry an umbrella and/or lightweight raincoat.
While Curitiba is not on the coast, the closets beach destinations are less than 2 hours by car:
Caiobá (Matinhos): Often cited as the closest, featuring a revitalized oceanfront, urban infrastructure, and nearby Praia Mansa.
Guaratuba: Offers an extensive, family-friendly beach known for the central beach area, Brejatuba, and Coroados beach.
Pontal do Sul (Pontal do Paraná): A common starting point for boats to Ilha do Mel, but also features its own beaches.
Ilha do Mel: Known for its car-free environment, pristine nature, and popular spots like Praia de Encantadas and Praia do Farol.
