Looking to take up learning understanding everything from basic electronics to how today's wideband radios work, so that I can build my own radio systems (not just ham radios), and talk radio concepts better. Would ARRL Handbook be a good enough guide to learn from? Or are there any missing pieces to that book which can be done with other sources?

Just a note from the author. This book is designed to help a reader understand the principles and applications of radio. It is designed for a reader who has learned about basic electronics, perhaps from a book such as the ARRL's "Understanding Basic Electronics." It assumes a high school level understanding of math and science. In addition to developing the science of radio communcication, sections describe other applications such as, radiolocation (radar) and radionavigation. It is developed following a historical perspective. Unfortunately, the first printing went out with some errors. The changes are noted on www.arrl.org/notes/9558/I hope you find the book helpful. I have no backround in electronics and this book was fine. I guess I at least knew how to read.... a schematic before I got my ticket 25+ years ago.

What I have found is that it takes a special individual to be able to write about a technical subject in a way someone with out an EE degree can understand. Like many things I get from ARRL it could be simplified..eHam.net Reviews - Subscribe Help eHam.net Reviews Subscriptions With eHam.net Reviews subscriptions, you can receive all messages posted to a product via email. Being new to Amateur Radio I had no idea what to expect when I signed up for the ARRL Teacher Institute on Wireless Technology. I only assumed that my week would be filled with radio communications and how to bring the concepts behind the radio sciences to the classroom. What I got was a room full of new educator friends, connections were made to names and faces at ARRL, and a week of first class instruction on basic electronics and wireless technologies that I could bring back to my local radio club and students in the classroom.

By midway through the first day of the institute we were already delving deep into the educational context for wireless technology, basic electronics, and soldering. While I had some experience in these areas with my work in Amateur Radio and my experience at Space Camp the summer prior, this was just as exciting as experiencing it for the first time. We opened our new Breadboard, connecting a circuit filled with wires, resistors, and LEDs, to help us understand the functions of our new Multimeter. By the end of day one we opened our ARRL designed clock kits to accomplish our first task. We were tasked with putting together the components of the clock from a kit and soldering the back of each piece. This was supposed to become homework, but all participants were so excited to be working on this project that we all stayed at ARRL an extra two hours that night to complete our clocks. The next morning, we were able to put the finishing touches of the base on the clock and plug them in to see that they worked.

In order to receive a license, you must first pass a short multiple-choice test of approximately 35 questions for Technician and General licenses, and 50 questions for Extra licenses. The Technician exam tests your knowledge of basic electronics, FCC regulations, and behavioral guidelines for transmitting on amateur radio bands. Exams are given periodically in multiple locations.

RACES member are expected to have a basic understanding of radio operations and a working knowledge of message handling procedures, RACES policies and procedures, the Incident Command System, and the Communications Annex of Emergency Operating Plan (EOP) of their respective municipality (or county). be457b7860
