There were no direct examples of errors, failures and risks of computing within Arrival. However, the potential of the existence of errors in the software would have resulted in a drastically different outcome. Within the film itself, the main two scientists heavily relied on a software to decode language from heptapods, as well as to create sentences to communicate back with them. If there were errors in the algorithm to decode the language, the scientists would be interpreting and sending back incorrect information that could have deadly consequences. On the heptapod end, if information was incorrectly translated, it could lead to the US scientists believing that they had dangerous intentions. However, in reality, the heptapods simply wanted to teach humans a new way to understand time and shift their mindset. On the other hand, if the software incorrectly compiled a sentence back to the heptapods, it could have shifted the relationship between the two. While in the film the heptapods showed little aggression, as a foreign species, there is a present risk for the damage they could have imposed on a world wide scale. Similarly, since the heptapod language was foreign to all scientists before landing, there is overall a limited understanding of the language on a whole. In fact, the software appeared in the film as the main way to learn and decoding the language. The human reliance on the software to translate means that there aren’t any experts who can verify or validate that the output of the code matches the intended output. With this, there is a risk to the human reliance on this software to communicate between the two parties. However, there is a complexity within the heptapod language that would have made the translation process much faster and simpler. While the group did not run into any failures due to the software, hopefully the group was aware of the risk that defects could have caused. Overall, this allowed the scientists to efficiently communicate with the heptapods and determine the heptapod’s purpose before breakout of war. Despite the potential risks, the use of computing technology was critical to the success accomplished in Arrival.
