Department of Family and Community Medicine

Welcome

The Department of Family and Community Medicine

In two thousand and thirteen (2013), the Department of Health (DOH) passed Department Order No. 2013 – 0171 which aims to establish or expand the Family Medicine residency training program in the DOH hospitals. This is in line with Administrative Order 2010-0036 that seeks to achieve Universal Health Care or “Kalusugan Pangkalahatan” for better health outcomes and equitable access to quality health care for all Filipinos. Beginning 2018, ‘Amang’ Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center opened its doors to Family and Community Medicine specialists as an indication of its commitment to DOH policies and enhancing its primary care services as well.

As a discipline, one of Family Medicine’s core competency is to promote the health and wellness of patients, their families, and communities; and manage their illnesses, dysfunctions, and problems using a “biopsychosocial” approach. The approach, which is holistic in quality, is the method being harnessed in this discipline in order to address the different faculties of every patient as a human being and is not limited only to physical (biologic), psychological (mental) social but also emotional, spiritual, cultural and moral contexts as well. A Family Physician deals with broad, comprehensive, and continuing care of individuals and families; and works as a vital link between the community and health care delivery service. With the rapid trend in specializing medicine which has resulted in a fragmented health care system, Family Doctors play a vital role in “reprogramming the synapses to work collectively” for the community.
