American Rock Mechanics Association - UKY Student Chapter

What is ARMA?

The American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA) is a professional and international engineering and scientific society, which promotes interaction among specialists, practitioners, scholars, and educators in rock mechanics and geomechanics. We advocate for individuals and firms in all aspects of rock mechanics and geomechanics, including multi-disciplinary rock physics and rock engineering technology advancement and technological applications for civil engineering, mining engineering and tunneling, oil and gas recovery, and geo-related socioeconomic problem-solving. We provide a forum and information resources for our members, related organizations, and the public, while our strong student membership ensures future continuity.

Rock Mechanics? Mining? Kentucky?

Mining has been an essential industry for Kentucky. The University of Kentucky’s Department of Mining Engineering has the distinction of being both among the oldest and newest programs of its type in the nation.

Mining is the extraction of minerals from the earth. Kentucky is a leading coal mining state in the US.

Rock mechanics is a core element of mining design. With mineral resources being extracted at faster rates. Mining has turned to deeper and challenging deposits. These challenges have a unique take on rock mechanics with greater stresses and different behavior than shallow mining.

Where are we?

We are located in the Mining and Minerals Resources Building at the University of Kentucky Campus.

Who are we?

We are a group of students with the desire and motivation to learn and discuss about the intricate world of rock mechanics.
