Teaching

My teaching interests are in metaphysics, history of analytic philosophy, early modern philosophy, and philosophy of mind.

I have over ten years teaching experience in several countries in a wide range of teaching formats, especially small-class discussion groups and upper-division undergraduate courses. I have taught both large lecture classes and smaller classes on Ethics, Applied Ethics, and Introduction to Philosophy, and upper-division undergraduate courses on Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science. I have taught Metaphysics several times and upper-level courses in Early Modern Philosophy, British Empiricism, and American Philosophy.

In the classroom, I create an interactive, dynamic learning space in which students can actually do philosophy through argumentative analysis and a reflective study of abstract concepts in concrete instances. Moreover, I am conscious about making the content of my courses inclusive and diverse. For instance:

In my course in Early Modern philosophy (posted on Project Vox), I have integrated such women thinkers as Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia, Anne Conway, Margaret Cavendish, and Emile Du Chatelet into the narrative. Similarly, in my Empiricism course I cover reactions to and developments of Locke’s philosophy by Damaris Masham, Mary Astell, and Catherine Cockburn, as well as criticisms of Berkeley and Hume by Mary Shepherd.

In my American Philosophy course, I teach Native American thought, the St. Louis Hegelians with an emphasis on women contributions by Susan Blow, Anna Brackett, Grace Bibb, Eliza Read Sunderland, Marietta Kies, the pragmatists Charles S. Peirce, William James, and John Dewey, the idealists Josiah Royce and Mary Calkins plus the influence of Indian thought on American philosophy, and developments of pragmatism by Alain Locke.
