The Guiding Light is a Community Exhibition Space located at Dataran Malawati, Kuala Selangor. The project was developed to provide a flexible and inclusive platform that supports exhibition activities, educational programmes, community workshops, and public gatherings within a compact footprint of approximately 400 square metres. As a civic space, the design aimed to strengthen community engagement while promoting cultural appreciation and social interaction among local residents and visitors.
The primary concept of the project was inspired by the concept of a lighthouse as a guide and point of orientation. Located near Bukit Malawati, an area known for its historical lighthouse and cultural significance, the project reinterpret the lighthouse's function architecturally. Rather than serving as a literal function, the building was designed to guide users through a sensory journey using light, shadow, spatial sequencing, and bodily movement. The project was further influenced by the architect, Tadao Ando, particularly his ability to create emotional experiences through minimalist forms, controlled daylighting, and the interaction between solid and void spaces.
The design approach focused on creating a sequence of spaces that gradually unfolded as users moved through the building. Solid concrete walls with limited openings were employed to establish a sense of mystery and anticipation, encouraging visitors to experience the architecture progressively rather than revealing all spaces immediately. A central courtyard was introduced as the heart of the project, allowing natural light and ventilation to penetrate the building while providing moments of pause and reflection within the exhibition journey. The integration of water elements and vegetation further enhanced the sensory quality of the space, contributing to a calm and contemplative atmosphere.
The project successfully achieved several design objectives. One of its major strengths was the development of a strong conceptual narrative that connected the site's context with the architectural experience. The idea of guidance and orientation was consistently translated into the building's form, circulation patterns, and spatial organisation. Additionally, the project effectively incorporated passive environmental strategies such as natural ventilation, daylight optimisation through controlled openings and courtyards, and rainwater harvesting systems. The inclusion of community-oriented programmes, including exhibition areas, a café, meeting spaces, and viewing decks, also supported the objective of fostering social interaction and cultural engagement.
Despite these strengths, the project had several limitations that became apparent through reflection. The site analysis conducted during the original design process primarily focused on basic environmental considerations such as sun path, prevailing wind directions, and surrounding context. More comprehensive investigations into pedestrian circulation patterns, tourist movement, accessibility, and user behaviour were limited. Furthermore, while sustainability principles were considered through passive strategies, opportunities to incorporate more advanced environmental measures, such as renewable energy integration and resource-efficient systems, were not fully explored.
In terms of user experience, the design primarily addressed general visitor needs but lacked a deeper consideration of inclusive and universal design principles. Features that could improve accessibility for elderly users, children, and individuals with disabilities were not extensively developed. Additionally, while the project emphasised the sensory experience of light and movement, other sensory dimensions that could enrich the architectural journey were not fully investigated.
Overall, The Guiding Light successfully established a meaningful architectural response that integrated community functions with experiential design. However, revisiting the project through the lens of Artificial Intelligence presents opportunities to critically reassess and enhance aspects related to site understanding, sustainability, inclusivity, and design decision-making. This reflective process demonstrates that architecture is not only about producing a final outcome but also about continuously questioning, refining, and improving design through informed and responsible judgement.
