Our Angus Story

Ariki Angus Stud was established in 2011 and is run by John and Karin Jury with the help of Rawiri and Grace Jury.

The farm is located 15km from State Highway 3 North of Urenui.

The objective is to breed high quality angus cattle that maximise farmers' profit using the latest genomic findings to enhance Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).

Ariki Angus is a family business, run by John and Karin Jury along with their son Rawiri and his wife Grace Jury.

In 2011 we purchased 12 heifers from Hillsborough Angus. Over the years we have added some cows from Gillimatong Angus, and we recently purchased a couple of Matauri Angus heifers. We are proud and pleased to now have a herd of 70 registered females.

Our cows are grazed on our hill country farm at the back of the Okoki Valley, north of Urenui. We are also grazing animals at a few other blocks.

Genetic progress is made by the use of HD50K and Breedplan, which enables us to select more profitable cattle and increases the speed of genetic change. We have used the Zoetis genotyping platform for all our heifers since 2015. Both our heifers and bulls are scanned annually as we do like to assess their meat quality.

We aim for progeny that will calve easily, grow, finish quickly and grade highly. We remain focused on producing animals that have a good phenotype, are docile and easy to handle. Our calves are yard weaned.

We started to use AI two years ago and intend to continue using this in the future. We also make sure that we use sound bulls with great EBVs.
