Most devices, such as modern smartphones, do some kind of background checking to see if they are behind a captive portal. They do this by requesting a known webpage and comparing the contents of that page, to what they should be. If contents are different, the device assumes there is a login page and creates a popup with this login page.
This DHCP option field is enabled automatically, but only if the router has a DNS name configured and has a valid SSL certificate (so that the login page can be accessed over HTTPS). When these requirements are met, a special DHCP option will be sent, containing a link to This link contains information in JSON format, instructing the client device of the captive portal status, and the location of the login page.
I'm trying to setup a hotspot on a CRS112-8P-4S with CAPsMAN (already up and running), I followed the wizard to setup the hotspot and everything seems ok but when I connect a client to the wifi network it doesn't get redirected automatically to the captive portal page to authenticate and can't access the internet.This is my current cable setup:
On the Network-Interfaces page click the Devices tab and add a device type Bridge Device named br-hotspot and physical device eth0.3. Then go back to the Interfaces tab and add an interface named hotspot of protocol Unmanaged and device br-hotspot.
I've configured a hotspot on a Mikrotik CCR1036-12G (OS 6.47.4), but after the device connects to the wifi and asks to authenticate in the network, the login page remains loading for a while and returns an error page with net:ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT. The hotspot worked perfectly already, but suddently stopped.
