I earned my Ph.D. in Economics from Brown University and have multiple master's degrees in Economics from both Brown University and Boğaziçi University, in addition to a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Boğaziçi University. I also completed coursework in the Management Ph.D. program at Boğaziçi University.
My academic interests are diverse, encompassing topics related to economic development with a long-term and institutional perspective, behavioral economics focusing on the influence of personal characteristics and institutions on cooperation, international economics with a concentration on trade and financial markets, as well as domestic and international migration. My research is predominantly empirical and interdisciplinary, aimed at offering fresh insights into the disparities and challenges seen worldwide. My academic contributions have been published in esteemed national and international journals, with one article published in the European Economic Review receiving the 'Most Cited Article Award.'
Prior to joining Boğaziçi University's faculty in 2019, I worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics at Brown University (2018 - 2019). I held full-time faculty positions at prestigious institutions in the United States, including New York University (2011-2012), Boston University (2009-2011), Tufts University (2008-2009), and Babson College (2007-2008). At these institutions, I taught a wide array of courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Between 2012 and 2018, I served as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Management at Kadir Has University. In this role, I supervised the research and dissertations of nine Ph.D. and three master's students, contributed to organizing two international finance conferences, several workshops, and numerous economics and finance seminars.
Furthermore, as an adjunct faculty member, I taught at various other institutions, including Harvard University (summers of 2022 and 2023 and 2024 and 2025), Boston College (2009), Northeastern University (2008), and the University of Rhode Island (2006) in the United States. And in Turkey, I also taught courses at Koç University (summer of 2014), Özyeğin University (summer of 2013), Sabancı University (summer of 2007).
Beyond my academic experience, I served as an academic consultant specializing in data analytics and statistical analysis at Istanbul Economy Research since 2018. In addition, I held the role of an economist at the research department of Finansbank in 2008 and worked as an academic team member on a research project jointly conducted by the State Planning Organization (DPT) and Boğaziçi University's Industrial Engineering Department in 2007.
