May 22- May 25

Spalding: We will use this week to review phonograms and spelling words that were taught this year. Can you believe your child learned 70 phonograms and over 150 spelling words!  

  

Sight Words: Your child should know all 100 sight words! Please make sure to practice and review them over the summer. 

 

Literature: For our last week of school, we will do some fun theme days to practice writing. Be sure to keep reading each day over the summer! 


May 15-May 19

Spalding: We will continue to review our phonograms focusing on ten at a time in class. In class we will practice new words but there will be no homework or assessment.  

 

Sight Words: This week we will review lists 1-10. 

 

Literature:  This week we will revisit some of the fun classic stories we read at the beginning of the year. Later in the week we will reflect on the school year and make a kindergarten memory book. We will continue to practice our poem for promotion.  

Math: This week will do some review work over chapter 12, ending the week with a cumulative assessment over chapter 12. There is no homework this week!!

Science: Students will be introduced to our solar system! They will learn the names of the planets and more about the Earth, moon, and sun. Students will get to explore and learn about astronauts.


May 8- May 12

Literature: We will finish out our series on Little Bear by reading, Father Bear Comes Home. We will continue to practice writing complete sentences using parts of the story for inspiration. Our Poem will be a special poem students will recite for you at promotion!  


Math: This week students will learn how to count and identify numbers to 100. Students will skip count by 5’s with songs!

Science and Geography: We will explore the rainforest habitat of South America. Students will learn that the rainforest has 4 layers. We will also learn more about toucans, chameleons, and the three-toed sloth.



April 24-28

Spalding: We will continue to review phonograms in class and students will be tested on 5 of the phonograms listed on their nightly homework. We will have five words this week that are similar, the only thing that will change is the vowel; big, bag, beg, bog, bug.  Our other five words will be: late, let, land, mother, three.  

 

Sight Words: This week we will review sight word list 7. 

 

Literature: This week we will start reading our Little Bear series beginning with the first book, Little Bear. Please have your child bring their copy of the book by Monday 4/24 to follow along and read in class together. Our poem will be “Ladybug, Ladybug.”  


Math: This week students will learn how to count, and identify numbers to 40. Students will skip count by 10’s with songs, grouping and fun games.

History: This week students will explore another continent; South America. Students will learn that Spanish is the native language spoken in South America and we will learn some Spanish words! Scholars will learn about the culture, landscape, and foods in Brazil. They will explore Macchu Picchu and even create their own Play-dough ruins.


April 17-21st

Spalding: Our spelling words this week will be: did, like, six, boy, book, hand, ring, live (You live in a house), live (The game is live.) 

Sight Words: This week we will review sight word list 6. 

Literature: This week we will read two fairy tales, The Princess and the Pea and Jack and the Beanstalk. We will review the elements of a fairy tale and discuss the problem and solution each character is faced with. Our poem will be “A Dillar, A Dollar.”

Math: This week students will learn how to differentiate between an addition or subtraction problem. We will also spend time learning about word problems. We'll end the week with a quiz over chapter 11.

Science: This week our unit will be all about taking care of the earth! We will discuss why we celebrate Earth Day and learn about the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle). We will also talk about pollution and where our garbage goes then we will practice citizenship by going on a litter hunt around campus!


April 11th-14th

Spalding: Our spelling words this week will be: all, you, your, out, time, may, into, him, today, look. On homework if your child needs assistance, remember to say the letter sounds, not the letter names. We will review single letter phonograms focusing on clock letters.  


Sight Words: This week we will review sight word list 5. 


Literature: This week we will read another Classic to Keep, Grasshopper on the Road. Please have your child bring their copy to school with them on Tuesday 4/11. We will delight in the story and continue to practice reading comprehension.  


Math:  Students will explore ways to differentiate between an addition or subtraction problem. Students will also determine what type of equation to use to complete picture stories.

April 3rd-April 5th

Literature: This week we will explore A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh. We will learn about A.A. Milne’s as an author and his inspiration for the Winnie-the-Pooh. We will explore four different short stories and use them to speak to the virtues represented, explore Pooh’s character traits, and find examples of friendship in the stories. 


Math: Students will continue to use their knowledge of subtraction to five and expand upon the knowledge, using numbers within 10. We will end the week with a cumulative test over chapters 9 & 10 (addition & subtraction).

Science: This week and next week we will be exploring all about insects! Scholars will learn the parts of an insect and what makes insects unique from other bugs. We will talk more in depth about bees, ants, and ladybugs, dragonflies, beetles praying mantises and the roles they play in our environment.  Scholars will make several adorable insect crafts.

March 27th - March 30th

Spalding: This week we will review previous taught phonograms. Phonograms that are on homework will be the ones we test over on Friday. Our words this week will be: good, of, am, red, us, not, old, ago, last, us.  Notice we have increased our spelling words to 10 as we prep for 1st grade.  


Sight Words: This week we will be reviewing sight word list 3. 

 

Literature: We will be reading our next classic to keep, Mouse Tales.  Please have your child bring in their copy of Mouse Tales on Monday 3/27 to read together as a class. We will delight in the tales and practice reading comprehension.  



Math:  Students will continue to use pictures to tell subtraction stories with numbers. We will practice subtracting fluently within 5! Please monitor your child’s Bubble Gum Math tests, if needed continue to practice math fact addition fluency with flashcards! If you are in need of flashcards, please email me!

Science: It’s butterfly week! Our class will receive our very own live caterpillars, as the caterpillars eat and grow, they will soon go into their chrysalis and emerge as

Beautiful butterflies, ready to be set free.!  Scholars will observe the caterpillars daily and keep track of their growth. We will learn all about the lifecycle of a butterfly,

the parts of a butterfly and how they eat. Later in the week, the scholars will use different kinds of pasta to depict the lifecycle of a butterfly. 


March 21st -March 24th


Spalding: We will learn our last three phonograms ti (cue: tall), si, ci (cue:short). We now know 70 phonograms!  Please be sure that you are also going back to the alphabet and reviewing the first 26 phonograms, especially all of the vowel sounds. Our words this week will be: will, we, an, my, up.

Sight Words: This week we will be reviewing sight word list 2. 

 

Literature: We will be reading our next classic to keep, Mouse Soup.  Please have your child bring in their copy of Mouse Soup on Tuesday 3/21 to read together as a class. We will discuss the problem and solution of the story and observe how the mouse outsmarts the tricky weasel. Our poem will be “I Do Not Mind You, Winter Wind.” 


Math: Students will use manipulatives and pictures to build their foundational skills of subtraction. We will end the week with a fun candy jar subtraction craft!

History: This week in history we will learn about Africa and some of its habitats and world famous landmarks. We will count ten different safari animals in the Swahili language.  Scholars will also make a Nigerian Masquerade mask as a fun craft.


March 6th-March 10th:

Spalding: Our new phonogram this week will be: eigh (cue: four letter). Our words will be: tin, tan, ten, ton, you. Note, we will take our weekly Spalding test on Thursday to accommodate our field trip.  

 

Sight Words: This week we will be reviewing sight word list 1.  

 

Literature: This week’s story will be another classic to keep, Mike Mulligan.  Please hold off on reading the story ahead of time, we would like to enjoy the story for the first time as a class family. Students do not need to bring in their copy. We will explore the importance of hard work and discuss the virtues Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne display. We will also read The Ugly Duckling and end the week by identifying the story elements.


Math: Students will use manipulatives and pictures to build their foundational skills of subtraction. We had great success with bubble gum math last week and look forward to it again this week!

This week in science we will revisit lifecycles of plants and what plants need.  We will also learn about farms and their importance in our communities in preparation for our field trip next week!



February 27th -  March 3rd

Sight Words: We have officially introduced 100 sight words! We will take this week to review list 10 then use the remainder of the year to review.   

 

Literature: This week we will be reading Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. We will explore the elements of a fairy tale and read versions of Snow White from around the world. Our Poem will be Humpty Dumpty. 



Math:  Students will continue to use their understanding of addition to five and expand upon that 

knowledge by adding numbers to 10. 


We will also begin our weekly addition math facts fluent practice, bubble gum math this week! This is a timed math fact quiz focusing on addition first then subtraction. Students will have 2 minutes to complete 15 simple addition problems. We'll start with 0+ and students will move up once they've passed each test, 1+ next , etc. Students who do not pass their quiz will retake a similar quiz until the facts are completed successfully. We'll be testing each Wednesday and you'll be able to see graded quizzes in their green folders each week. Each student will be working at their own pace. You can supplement with practicing math flash cards at home! Flash cards are a great way to commit these math facts to memory. If you need flash cards, please let me know, I’d be happy to send some home with your child. Once students master two quiz's they'll earn a piece of bubble gum! It's a fun way for students to practice their math fact skills.

Science: We will be starting a unit on the exploration of the five senses; hearing, sight, smell, hearing, and sight. This week students will guess the sound, create their own texture craft and taste different food items to identify differences.

Science: This week in science we will learn about the oceans and their zones.  We’ll compare salt water to tap water in a science experiment/observation. We will also learn about many of the animals that live in the oceans. At the end of the week we will tie everything together with a submarine activity.


February 13th-February 17th

Students will now have a list of 10 phonograms/spelling words that they will write one time each. Literature: Our fairy tale unit continues as we read the story of Cinderella.  We will read different versions and practice identifying the main characters and identifying the beginning, middle and end. Our poem will be “Little Miss Muffet.” 



Math: Students will begin to understand adding two numbers together through addition stories and math facts. We will use manipulatives and counters to create stories students can pictorially see and understand.

Literature: We will round out our unit on Mr. Popper’s Penguins this week. We will be sad to see the penguins go but excited to see how the story ends. We will also start our fairy tale unit with the story, Three Billy Goat’s Gruff. 


Math: Students will continue to compare lengths of objects using non-standard units of measurement. We will also begin our unit on height toward the end of the week.

History and Geography: We will continue our continent study by spending this week learning all about Australia! We will learn Australian words and explore the unique animals that live in the outback. Students will also learn about aboriginal art in Australia and they will create their own dot paintings.

January 23rd-27th


Spalding: This week we will learn the phonograms oe (cue:toe) and ph (cue:two letter). We will introduce our first spelling words, they are: me, do. When writing spelling words on homework have your child say the sounds they hear first then have them write it on their paper while repeating the sounds.  


As Spalding increases in difficult it is imperative that your child is doing homework every night, we appreciate your continued support!  

 

Sight Words: This week we will introduce sight word list 8: two, more, write, go, see, number, no, way, could, people. 

 

Literature: We will continue our unit on Mr. Popper’s Penguins.  We have enjoyed meeting the Popper’s and Captain Cook.  The sweet giggles I hear as we are reading about the penguins and their crazy antics has been a highlight of our week. Our poem will be “Sing a Song of Six Pence.” 


Math: Students will use concrete and pictorial representations to develop an understanding of measurable attributes of an object using its length and height. They will then use these measurements to compare two objects using comparison language. We will also celebrate our 100th day of school this week! In math we'll count by 10's using a yummy snack mix!

History: This week for History, Science and Geography we will be learning about Chinese New Year, the continent of Asia and the countries China and India. We will also be celebrating our 100th Day of school on Wednesday and do lots of fun counting activities!


January 16-20

Literature: We are so excited to begin reading our second Classic to Keep, Mr. Popper’s Penguins. We will be reading this story for the next three weeks. We will be reading the story to the class, so no books are needed. We ask that you please hold off on reading the book with your child at home until we are finished with the entire story so we can enjoy it as a class family. Our weekly poem will be “Little Boy Blue”. 

 

Math: Students will use their prior knowledge identify, group, take apart, and order numbers to 20. We will do this in a variety of ways, using double ten frames, manipulatives and paper plates.

History: This week in History, we will learn about Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Teresa. Students will discuss what it means to be kind and fair to all. We will learn about the life of MLK and the positive things he did. We will learn all about words and acts of kindness and why they matter. Later in the week we will learn about another humble person in History, Mother Teresa. We will talk about how MLK and Mother Teresa are similar and different.

 


January 9-13

Spalding: This week we will introduce 2 new phonograms, ew and ui (cue: not used).

Literature: This week we will read two tales from The Brothers Grimm, The Breman Town Musicians and The Wolf and the Seven Kids. We will use these stories to identify the characters, setting, problem and solution.  


Math: This week we will be working on learning how to count, write numbers 17-20. Students will use prior knowledge to learn grouping tens and ones together to make a teen number. Students will also learn how to group number 20 using a double ten frame.

Literature: This week we will read two winter stories to help us work on story elements. We will use the stories to make predictions and sequence events.  

Math: This week we will review concepts of building numbers greater than 10. We will use marshmallows to count in a marshmallow math game!

This week in Geography and History we will learn about holiday celebrations around the world. The students will learn about how Sweden, Germany, Mexico and Israel celebrate the holidays this time of year!

December 12-16

Spalding: There will be no new phonograms this week. We will use this week to review then begin introducing new phonograms and spelling words when we return from winter break. 

 

Sight Words: This week we will review list 6. 

 

Literature: This week we will read "The Gingerbread Man.”  We will explore different versions, and, in the afternoon, we will even go on a hunt to catch the Gingerbread Man. The poem will be, "Three Blind Mice.” Please continue to send your child’s book bag daily with their sight word lists inside. Students should be reading their assigned book to you each night and reviewing their sight words. Thank you for your continued support! 

Math: Students will use their prior knowledge of numbers to 10, as they learn about and build their understanding of numbers to 20.

Science & History:  This week students will learn more about plants and their needs in their varying environments.  We will conduct some fun science experiments to understand how plants absorb the items they need to thrive.  We will also learn about the first Olympics in Ancient Greece to go with our exciting Field Day on Friday!


December 5- December 9

Spalding: This week we will learn three new phonograms ed, wh and ck (cue: two letter).  Please be sure that you are reviewing phonogram cards on a daily basis as our phonograms increase in difficulty.  

 

Sight Words: We will introduce list 6 this week. The words are: will, up, other, about, out, many, then, them, these, so.  

 

Literature: We will continue reading the Velveteen Rabbit and finish our story this week.  To finish off our unit students will be allowed to bring in one small, non-pop culture, stuffed toy to school on Wednesday 12/7!  This can be an animal or doll that is special to your child, however, it may not be a character from a show or movie.  Please limit the size so that it is able to sit in their lap at their desk, and not interfere with the learning environment.  


Math: Students will learn to identify a group of related objects and how to categorize the objects by

similarities and differences so that they can create sub-groups. We will learn about different ways to make and break apart 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 using 2 parts and the whole.

Geography and Science: We will continue to explore the continent of Antarctica and the Arctic this week. Scholars will learn all about polar animals and how they survive in the cold. We will explore other animals like Penguins, Walruses, Snow Owls, and Narwhals. 


November 28-December 2

Spalding: This week we will introduce 4 new phonograms. They will be ea, aw, au (cue: not used) and or.  

 

Sight Words: We will introduce list 5, that brings us to 50 sight words!  The words are: an, each, which, she, do, how, there, if, use, their 

 

Literature: We begin our unit on The Velveteen Rabbit this week.  Please hold off on reading this story until after we have completed the book.  We love to see how the students explore and discover the story for the first time. Students will not be required to bring the book in.  We have learned in the past that it becomes more of a distraction.  This year, we want to students to just enjoy listening to the story, and then have it in their library at home for the future. Our poem will be “Little Jack Horner.” 


Math: We begin chapter 6 this week. In this chapter students will begin to see the smaller parts 

that make up numbers to 10, thus providing the foundation for the part-part-whole relationships that they will continue to explore in this chapter. Students’ understanding will be extended and deepened by composing and decomposing numbers to 10. In addition, they will concretely and pictorially experience putting numbers together and taking them apart in real-world contexts.
