This is an index for helping you to access free sewing books on Archive.org from the 1900-1910s. These sewing manuals would originally have been used in conjunction with paper sewing patterns of this period. You can find this same information as a blog post here

Using these sewing books in conjunction with the antique patterns is how our predecessors would have approached their sewing projects. Sewing was also a technical skill that would have been passed down through the generations, or part of a home economics program. Since most students no longer have access to home economics, we are lucky to have a written record of techniques. Pre-20th century books would loosely explain technique, but not always illustrate. As printing technology advanced, so, too, did the practical sharing of knowledge. You may find books reaching towards the 1920s have more in-depth instruction, though I have not previewed each link.

Top : I reduced the collars height by 1cm for a more casual look. Made the front piece by cutting on fold from centre front. I wanted it cropped, so I only added 2cm to the waistline mark. Sewed the bust darts but omitted the waist darts for a more boxy look. Created a neck facing piece and inserted a long slit opening on the back, closed with a loop and button. More details down below!

Bias Tape

The materials list called for 1m of single fold bias tape (50cm for each armhole). I did not have the right color in my stash of store bought tapes, and also the weight of the fabric is very different. Most store bought tapes are either cotton or polyester. So I wanted to make my own. However, as I was working with 3m of fabric, I only had a narrow strip to work with. This meant I could not cut strictly on the diagonal of the fabric (i.e.45deg) but I cheated my adjust the angle so that I could fit 2 strips of 50cm in the piece of scrap left. This only works if the edge you are binding is not extremely curved, and luckily for me, the armhole lines are made up of rather gentle curves and for the most part it is a straight line. If you are say binding a round neckline this hack may not work as the bias tape may not be as flexible as one cut on the diagonal. Having said that, If you followed the fabric requirements given by the book (3.9m) you should have no problems cutting on the diagonal since the fabric estimate usually provides for some room for error.

They are developed by tailors, seamstresses or dressmakers, but also by fashion designers starting their career.

It is the production or manufacture of garments, which have gone through a process of design, pattern creation, cutting and sewing of pieces to result in a garment. In addition, it should be noted that when we talk about cutting and sewing, we are generally talking about tailor-made garments. This process is different in the textile industry, which produces the pieces in series. In this case, the garments are produced in different sizes and the public can only choose between them.

Fashion designers need the cutting and sewing developed by seamstresses, an activity that is delegated to them so that the designer can devote themself to the creation of sketches of the different garments that can be unique or designed for industrial manufacturing.

I really wanted to put together a list of all-time favorites from my own shelf. Each one of these is from my collection, and is something I use frequently, or find really inspiring and fun. These are the books I own and love.

Sarai started Colette back in 2009. She believes the primary role of a business should be to help people. She loves good books, sewing with wool, her charming cats, working in her garden, and eating salsa.

Nice list!! I have a few of these on my shelf and just went to order The Complete Book of Sewing by Constance Talbot (1968) from Ebay! I also have a couple of Adele Margolis books that are simply wonderful!

P.S. Colour of item may slightly vary due to camera flash and light conditions. Please note cover of paper may vary as publishers keep on changing front of books each time they publish new edition. Please also note there may be little bit dust or rub marks on books which happens due to storage on shelves and is inevitable

After posting the dictionary of sewing terms, I shall now go through an example of a typical pattern you can find in the sewing books. Most pattern books follow a similar structure such as this one.

Stretch velvet offers an excellent opportunity to give pile fabrics a try with less hassle. Since stretch fabrics require less in the way of closures and shaping, you can try the cutting and sewing techniques outlined below without fussing over finer details. This is perfect for first-time velvet sewers!

The process for cutting velvet is very similar to that of cutting silk or other fine fabrics. The first and most important thing to know is you must cut velvet single layer. This will require you to make a few accommodations. For one, any pattern pieces that would have been cut on the fold should be traced so that the pattern is open."

Secondly, it is important to keep in mind that you will most likely not be able to cut your fabric according to the pattern layout. This is due to the fact that you are cutting single layer, but also because velvet has a directional nap. The best way to acquaint yourself with nap is to get your hands on some velvet. When you run your hand along the right side of the fabric, the pile will feel smooth when you move in the direction of the nap, and rough when you move against the nap.

3. I recommend that you do not pin the pattern in place (I know some sewists like to do this). I find that pinning it can introduce distortions or stretches in the fabric, which is a big no. Instead, use some heavy books or sewing weights to hold it in place. (I removed the weights for the photos).
