In 1968, SLATA was established to:
advance the general welfare of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of St. Louis
raise the standards of the teaching profession
aid in achieving and maintaining adequate salaries, sound retirement systems, and improved working conditions
enable teachers to work effectively as vital factors in education
encourage teachers to continue their professional development
defend teachers' rights as employees, as members of the Church, and as citizens

Which rights are guaranteed to SLATA members? SLATA members are guaranteed the rights of:
representation through collective bargaining for contracts and personnel policies
seniority after a three-year probationary period
grievance procedures to ensure fair treatment under the agreement and personnel policies
