Competition Overview

Cities around the world are undergoing a transformation driven by digital mobility, environmental awareness, and new forms of living and working. Chiang Mai has emerged as one of the world’s most recognized hubs for digital nomads, attracting creative professionals seeking alternative urban lifestyles.

Within this evolving landscape, San Pa Khoi District, located along the eastern bank of the Ping River, presents a unique opportunity to rethink how architecture can support emerging urban cultures while maintaining strong connections with local identity and ecological systems.

The international design competition “Latitude: San Pa Khoi – The Nomad’s Slowdown” invites architects, designers, urbanists, and researchers from around the world to explore how biophilic design and slow urbanism can shape the future of creative districts. Beyond individual architectural interventions, the competition also encourages participants to explore Biophilic Planning strategies that integrate ecological networks, urban landscapes, and human wellbeing at the district scale.

Participants are invited to envision how San Pa Khoi can evolve into a biophilic urban ecosystem, where green infrastructure, public spaces, and built environments form an interconnected system that supports both environmental resilience and creative urban life.

Participants are encouraged to envision a new architectural prototype where nature, culture, and digital lifestyles coexist within a resilient urban environment.
