Data archiving moves data that is no longer actively used to a separate storage device for long-term retention. Archive data consists of older data that remains important to the organization or must be retained for future reference or regulatory compliance reasons. Data archives are indexed and have search capabilities, so files can be located and retrieved.

Archived data is stored on a lower-cost tier of storage, reducing primary storage consumption and the related costs. An important aspect of a business's data archiving strategy is to inventory its data and identify what data is a candidate for archiving.

Some archive systems treat archive data as read-only to protect it from modification, while other data archiving products enable writes as well as reads. For example, WORM -- write once, read many -- technology uses media that is not rewritable.

The greatest benefit of archiving data is it reduces the cost of primary storage. Primary storage is typically expensive, because a storage array must produce a sufficient level of input/output operations per second to meet operational requirements for user read/write activity. In contrast, archive storage costs less, because it is typically based on a low-performance, high-capacity storage medium. Data archives can be stored on low-cost hard disk drives (HDDs), tape or optical storage that is generally slower than performance disk or flash drives.

Other archival systems use offline data storage in which archive data is written to tape or other removable media using data archiving software, rather than being kept online. Because tape can be removed, tape-based archives consume far less power than disk systems. This translates to lower archive storage costs.

Cloud storage is another possible archive target. Amazon Glacier, for example, is designed for data archiving. This method is inexpensive but requires an ongoing investment. In addition, costs can grow over time as more data is added to the storage cloud. Cloud providers usually store archived data on tape or HDDs.

The archival process is almost always automated using archiving software. The capabilities of such software vary from one vendor to the next, but most archiving software automatically moves aging data to the archives according to a data archival policy set by the storage administrator. This policy might also include specific retention requirements for each type of data.

Some archiving software will automatically purge data from the archives once it has exceeded the life span mandated by the organization's data retention policy. Many backup software and data management platforms have added archiving functionality to their products. This can be a cost-effective and efficient way to archive data. However, these products might not include all the functionality found in a dedicated archive software product.

Data archiving helps businesses meet compliance both by storing data long term and by consolidating data for easy access in case of an audit. The rules dictating the length of time for which data must be retained, where it can be stored and who has access to it vary by industry and the type of data that businesses in that industry generate.

OpenText information archiving solutions optimize for long-term compliance and user productivity. Information archiving is offered as a general purpose platform for structured and unstructured data or optimized for active archiving of SAP data.

1) Create a new ' No Archive' policy that contains the required settings stop archiving emails.. funny thing is looking under the archiving rules tab I dont see the option where you can select 'No Archiving' !

2) Create a new provisioning group specific to this case selecting the new 'No Archive' policy and ensure its higher up the order list than the generic provisioning group that is currently applying and auto archiving emails.

3) Add specific users to 'No Archive' provisioning group

Worth noting - the user will still have a vault and require access to retrieve emails. We simply want to stop the auto archiving process on a per user basis.. I understand they may still be able to manually send emails to vault but this is not a concern.

You can see that when disabling the maibox. If you still need the buttons you can use another method to disable archiving. Place those users in a provisioning group and uncheck the option to "Archive mailboxes in this provisioning group" and ensure they are first to be provisioned.

I am looking into archiving procedures for our VLE platform. As we are a university originally born in Scotland but now with 5 global campuses, I thought that the best way of creating a hierarchical structure which is not Anglo-centric would be having:

I developed a course archiving plan last summer and began the rollout in October. So far it's been working great, and has been well-received by our faculty. Worth noting right up front is that this is not an automated process (yet). Our programmer has enough on his plate, so this is something that I handle with some manually-edited SIS files.

For archiving, per se, places I've been have generally told faculty to make local copies (How do I export a Canvas course? ) of anything they want to keep after a certain period of time (usually 1-3 years) and periodically sent out reminders and then deleted anything older than the cutoff.

For example, write job got canceled midway so there are archived file generated in FS, I read in some forums that we should delete the job in sm37 and mark the archiving sessions as invalid then we can rerun with same parameter. However, some also suggest that we can proceed with the delete/store process as there are already archived files written. Then we can rerun with the same parameter and it will pick up what's left.

When a write job fails, there is also no spool list. Because of that we always mark the the archiving session as invalid and rerun the job via our job scheduling system. In the customizing, we have set the flag "Delete Jobs / Not Scheduled" for all archiving objects because the delete jobs (report RSARCHD) are also automaticaly scheduled via the job scheduling system (after the write job has been successfully completed).

Web archiving is the process of collecting portions of the World Wide Web and ensuring the collection is preserved in an archive, such as an archive site, for future researchers, historians, and the public. Due to the massive size of the Web, web archivists typically employ web crawlers for automated collection.

As a result of this perceived under-representation, some activists are making efforts to decolonize contemporary archival institutions that may employ hegemonic and white supremacist practices by implementing subversive alternatives such as anarchiving or counter-archiving with the intention of making intersectional accessibility a priority for those who cannot or do not want to access contemporary archival institutions.[74][75][69] An example of this is Morgan M. Page's description of disseminating transgender history directly to trans people through various social media and networking platforms like tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram, as well as via podcast.[75] While the majority of archived materials are typically well conserved within their collections, anarchiving's attention to ephemerality also brings to light the inherent impermanence and gradual change of physical objects over time as a result of being handled.[76]

The concept of counter-archiving brings into question what tends to be considered archivable and what is therefore selected to be preserved within conventional contemporary archives.[75][77] With the options available through counter-archiving, there is the potential to "challenge traditional conceptions of history" as they are perceived within contemporary archives, which creates space for narratives that are often not present in many archival materials.[78] The unconventional nature of counter-archiving practices makes room for the maintenance of ephemeral qualities contained within certain historically significant experiences, performances, and personally or culturally relevant stories that do not typically have a space in conventional archives.[79]
