Honorable Mention Title: The Floating Memorial Team: Soo Bum You and Bongjai Shin The purpose of this project is to celebrate the original 520 bridge. The design is very sculptural, turning the old pontoons into an historical relic.

The rain held off just long enough for them to see each other and get a few quick portraits on the State Street bridge. Just as the wedding party got across the street the skies opened up so we took shelter under the bridge for a few minutes to let the rain pass.

Histories and theories of architecture play increasingly important roles in defining and reshaping the boundaries, tasks, and challenges of contemporary architecture and urbanism. This focus area provides a platform for students to build a substantive knowledge base and develop deeper understandings of the crucial issues confronting architecture, urbanism, and the built environment. Critical, multidisciplinary methodologies of interpretation and analysis provide potent means to research and design in the 21st century.

Education could be one answer to addressing issues of disproportionate disparities in communities suffering from social, economic and environmental impact. While there has been progress made toward improving the quality and accessibility of education, there is still more work to be done, especially for those that are still marginalized. How can design help bridge the gap between educational resources and providing it to those that are marginalized? Much data has been collected on the correlation between educational attainment and the quality of life for individuals and communities as a whole. Yet there are still many who struggle with obtaining this life-changing opportunity.

Today, MTA Bridges and Tunnels is the largest bridge and tunnel toll agency in the United States. In 2022, 327 million crossings were recorded, earning $1.2 billion dollars in revenue. Check out more vintage photos in the slides that follow!

NYC bridges and tunnels under the purvey of the MTA include The Robert R. Kennedy Bridge, Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge, Henry Hudson Bridge, Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Bridge, Throgs Neck Bridge, Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Hugh L Carey Tunnel (formerly known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel) and the Queens Midtown Tunnel.

In the photos above, you can see the Throgs Neck Bridge coming together. Both images date to 1960. In the second image, you can see workers compressing the suspension cables. The bridge opened the following year, connecting Queen and the Bronx.

Even as a child I was fascinated by photography. I grew up on a vineyard on the Moselle. There was a tasting room with an old cupboard and an old mantel clock on it, next to it was a basket full of photographs, mostly old black-and-white photographs. I often sneaked into this room and look at them. This basket is now on my bookshelf. However, the road to my own photography journey was a long one... after a few half-hearted attempts. In 2017, before my fortieth birthday, I thought about what I would like to give myself as a gift. The choice fell on a bridge camera. Five years and three cameras later, photography has become an integral part of my life. In these five years I have gradually discovered my favourite motifs and learned step by step on my own how I want my pictures to look. Streets, especially alleyways and architecture make my heart beat faster, everything else comes from the heart.

Chromatin architecture is regulated through both enzymatic and non-enzymatic activities. For example, the Polycomb Group (PcG) proteins maintain developmental gene silencing using an array of chromatin-based mechanisms. The essential Drosophila PcG protein, Posterior Sex Combs (PSC), compacts chromatin and inhibits chromatin remodeling and transcription through a non-enzymatic mechanism involving nucleosome bridging. Nucleosome bridging is achieved through a combination of nucleosome binding and self-interaction. Precisely how PSC interacts with chromatin to bridge nucleosomes is not known and is the subject of this work. We determine the stoichiometry of PSC-chromatin interactions in compact chromatin (in which nucleosomes are bridged) using Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). We find that full compaction occurs with one PSC per nucleosome. In addition to compacting chromatin, we show that PSC oligomerizes nucleosome arrays. PSC-mediated oligomerization of chromatin occurs at similar stoichiometry as compaction suggesting it may also involve nucleosome bridging. Interactions between the tail of histone H4 and the acidic patch of histone H2A are important for chromatin folding and oligomerization, and several chromatin proteins bind the histone H2A acidic patch. However, mutation of the acidic patch of histone H2A does not affect PSC's ability to inhibit chromatin remodeling or bridge nucleosomes. In fact, PSC does not require nucleosomes for bridging activity but can bridge naked DNA segments. PSC clusters nucleosomes on sparsely assembled templates, suggesting it interacts preferentially with nucleosomes over bare DNA. This may be due to the ability of PSC to bind free histones. Our data are consistent with a model in which each PSC binds a nucleosome and at least one other PSC to directly bridge nucleosomes and compact chromatin, but also suggest that naked DNA can be included in compacted structures. We discuss how our data highlight the diversity of mechanisms used to modify chromatin architecture. 2351a5e196
