I have been drawing stuff since I could lift a crayon. Ever since I can remember I’ve loved to draw, spending many hours creating adventures on paper involving people, cars, buildings, airplanes; you name it, I drew it. I started out in my career drawing homes in pen and ink while attending college in New England. After college I moved to Florida and went to work as an architectural draftsperson for a large architect firm where I taught myself perspective drawing from 2 dimensional architectural plans. I found this very rewarding and challenging, concentrating all my energy on this endeavor. I advanced from draftsperson to conceptual designer where I was responsible for our presentation illustrations. After a few years working in architects’ offices I ventured out on my own. Since 1980 I have produced thousands of architectural illustrations and various graphic art projects for architects, designers, advertising agencies, developers, corporations and individuals throughout the United States and the Caribbean. In 2010 the Florida Dept. of Architecture granted me permission to teach architectural sketching techniques as a continuing education class for architects based on an online web site I launched in 2007. https://sites.google.com/site/learningtodrawbuildings/ teaches architectural illustration techniques as well as showcases work I’ve produced over the last decades.
Architectural Quick Sketch has taken me back to my roots. I have been resistant to giving up hand drawn art for digital because I believe it serves an important purpose especially in the early stage of the design process. I presently live in the mountains outside Asheville, NC and work exclusively with the design industry as I enjoy the creative vibe. In my free time I serve my community in many volunteer efforts one of which is helping disabled, injured and elder Veterans. This side of life can be seen at www.jimstilwell.com
