The company began in 1939 as M.L.J. Magazines, Inc., which primarily published superhero comics. The initial Archie characters were created in 1941 by publisher John L. Goldwater and artist Bob Montana,[4] in collaboration with writer Vic Bloom.[5][6][7] They first appeared in Pep Comics #22 (cover-dated Dec. 1941).[5] With the creation of Archie, publisher John Goldwater hoped to appeal to fans of the Andy Hardy films starring Mickey Rooney.[6]

The February 1962 issue of Harvey Kurtzman's Help! magazine featured his parody of the Archie characters in its Goodman Beaver story, "Goodman Goes Playboy", which was illustrated by frequent collaborator Will Elder.[12] Help! publisher Jim Warren received a letter on December 6, 1961, accusing Help! of copyright infringement and demanding removal of the offending issue from newsstands. Warren was unable to recall the magazine,[13] but he agreed to settle out of court rather than risk an expensive lawsuit. Warren paid Archie Comics $1,000, and ran a note of apology in a subsequent issue of Help![14] The story was reprinted in the book collection Executive Comic Book in 1962, with the artwork modified by Elder to obscure the appearance of the Archie characters. Archie Comics found their appearance still too close to its copyrighted properties, and threatened another lawsuit. Kurtzman and Elder settled out of court by handing over the copyright to the story. Archie Comics held onto the copyright and refused to allow the story to be republished. A request from Denis Kitchen in 1983 to include the story in his Goodman Beaver reprint collection was turned down.[13] After The Comics Journal co-owner Gary Groth discovered that Archie Comics had allowed the copyright on "Goodman Goes Playboy" to expire, he had the story reprinted in The Comics Journal #262 (September 2004),[15] and made it available as a PDF on the magazine's website.[16][17]

In the 1970s and 1980s, Spire Christian Comics, a line of comic books by Fleming H. Revell, obtained license to feature the Archie characters in several of its titles, including Archie's Sonshine, Archie's Roller Coaster, Archie's Family Album, and Archie's Parables. These comics used Archie and his friends to tell stories with strong Christian themes and morals, sometimes incorporating Bible scripture. In at least one instance, the regular characters meet a Christ-like figure on the beach, and listen as he gently preaches Christian values.[19]

Archie launched a short-lived fantasy and horror imprint, Red Circle Comics, in the 1970s. The company revived that imprint in the 1980s for its brief line of superhero comics.[9] Later in the 1980s, Archie planned to publish superheroes again with the Spectrum Comics imprint, featuring a number of high-profile talents, but it cancelled this attempt before publishing a single issue.[20]

In February 2017, Marvel had licensed Archie Comics to publish Marvel Digests collections for the newsstand market starting in November 2017.[65] With three TV series at various stages, Archie Comics expanded its film and television operations in February 2019 to a division, Archie Comics Studios, with the hire of two executives, Siobhan Bachman, senior vice-president of film and television, and Matthew Lottman, head of development & production.[66]

The company's headquarters is in a 10,300-square-foot (960 m2) property in the Sanborn Map Building in Pelham, New York. It was in a facility Mamaroneck, New York, with warehouse facilities and 7,000 square feet (650 m2) of office space until May 2015, when it moved to its current location. Due to changes in the comics industry with digitization, the company needed more office space and less warehouse space.[3]

In response, industry publishers organized a self-censorship regime under the Comics Code Authority. Designed to head off threatened government regulation, the Authority enforced its Seal of Approval, or self-imposed guidelines used to judge comics as appropriate for all ages.

The Archie Comic Collection, which includes more than 100 pieces of original works of art, was amassed by notable cartoonist, author and collector Craig Yoe and acquired by the University Libraries in 2020. The collection is just one of many housed in the Dowd Illustration Research Archive, which aims to preserve the history of illustration and visual culture.

The Syracuse University Libraries Learning Commons is hosting an amazing showcase of Archie Comics memorabilia from the private collection of Archie Comics Co-CEO Nancy Silberkleit on the first floor of Bird Library through May 15.

The World of Archie Comics Archive offers access to the backfiles of 100+ publications from Archie Comics, spanning the early 1940s to 2020. As well as Archie, this collection includes other major titles such as Sabrina: The Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats, Betty & Veronica, and Jughead.

I especially liked the WWII-era comics (not at all the light-hearted version I grew up with in the 1960s!) and have recommended them to a colleague who teaches a WWII literature course. I think there are also good options for comparing eras, which I do in many of my own courses.

This is a book review of an Archie comic book/graphic novel by creators Mark Waid, Fiona Staples, Annie Wu and Veronica Fish. This Archie comic takes its cue from the aesthetics and look of the new Riverdale tv series, while keeping to the original Archie comics.

Shane Romanchick is a TV and Movie News Writer for Collider. He also runs his own blog Entershanement Reviews where he writes about and reviews the latest movies. He graduated from Regis College in 2019 with a Bachelor's in Communication and minored in both Film Studies and Writing.

His love for writing and film started at a very young age with his earliest memory being watching Blue's Clues when he was 3 months old. That show means the world to him as it unlocked his creative side and made him comfortable in his own skin. From there, Shane became a huge fan of comics books and cartoons. He spent most of his childhood watching Scooby-Doo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Batman, and Justice League. His favorite childhood films includes Scooby-Doo 2002, Batman Begins, and Spider-Man.

Shane's High School years is when he discovered his love for Horror. Watching films like Halloween, Scream, and Friday the 13th for the first time, he never looked back. He was a horror fan for life. Paranormal Activity 4, It Follows, and Annabelle were the first batch of films he was brave enough to see in theaters. Now a decade later, he has become an expert in the genre. Black Christmas, Anna and the Apocalypse, Oculus and It Follows are some of his favorite films of all time. However, it has been slasher films that have become his true confort food. Scream VI, Freaky, Sick, Terrifier 2 and X are some of his recent fravorites. In addition, he's a huge Halloween fan and he'll never apologize for his love for Halloween Kills and Ends. In terms of action, Shane is also a huge James Bond fan and the ending of No Time to Die was the hardest he's ever cried in a theater.

However, Shane isn't just a movie guy. He also loves video games. Super Mario Sunshine, The Last of Us Part 1 and 2, and Batman: Arkham City are some of his favorites. Music plays a big part in his life as well. Given that Shane's a big horror fan, you might be surprised to learn that he's favorite genre is pop. Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, The Jonas Brothers, and Demi Lovato play on repeat while he's writing.

In his free time, Shane loves going for runs and playing with his 16-year-old beagle Butterscotch. Butters for short, she has been the greatest love of his life and inspires him everyday, both creatively and emotionally. On top of that, he's now a huge collector. He loves Funko Pop, McFarlane Toys, and Neca's huge line of horror figures. In the last two years he has been going to a lot of conversations to buy an unhealthy amount of figures. This has also allowed him to meet some of his favorite filmmakers/actors like Mike Flanagan, Matthew Lillard, John Carpenter, Grace Caroline Curry, Steve Burns and Kathryn Newton.

Shane has been writing for Collider since October 2021 and loving every mintue of it. However, one day he hopes to become a screenwriter. At the moment he is currently working on his first screenplay tentatively titled "The Alien Murders" which he has describes as Halloween III meets The Faculty.

Arguably the most successful non-superhero comic book character ever, Archie debuted in December 1941, in Pep Comics No. 22. Today, more than 80 years later, we look back at the rise of Archie comics as a wholesome alternative to comic books of the time. e24fc04721
