HYBRID TEA ROSES: The ever popular Hybrid Tea grows as a large-flowered bush. Differs from the floribunda group in that its blooms are larger and less in number. The striking blooms tend to be a classic rose shape. They usually bloom more than once in the same season with large flowers borne in Summer - Autumn. The beauty of Hybrid Tea Roses lies in their exquisitely formed, pointed ‘bud flowers’. Each stem usually holds a single flower with sparse foliage at the base. Hybrid Teas have a broad colour palette, which includes many bright, vibrant shades. Contrary to what is often believed, some varieties are very fragrant, although others have no fragrance at all. They do not blend well with other plants in the mixed border, but with their short, upright habit of growth they are excellent for rose beds, formal rose gardens and even narrow borders – particularly borders along a fence or in front of the house

FLORIBUNDA ROSES: A cluster-flowered bush. Shrubs that usually bloom more than once in the same season - usually large sprays of flowers in Summer - Autumn. Unrivalled for providing a long-lasting bedding display. Floribunda roses were originally produced by crossing Hybrid Teas with Polyantha Roses. They are prized for creating a mass of colour by bearing many flowers held in large clusters – in fact, few plants can produce so much colour over such a long season. Floribundas usually have little scent, although more fragrant varieties are now appearing. Ideal for growing in large bed and mixed borders; they are generally hardy, more robust and more disease resistant than Hybrid Tea Roses and are therefore easier to grow.

NOSTALGIC ROSES: These beautiful roses are reminiscent of historic English bourbon roses. The nostalgic range are compact plants growing to about 90-100cm tall. They have good disease resistance, are ideal for rose beds, cut flowers, planted in a mixed border, or even in a large container

CLIMBING ROSES: Vigorous climbing roses, diverse in growth and colour, some flowering in summer only, others flowering more than once in the same season, flowering in Summer – Autumn

RAMBLING ROSES: All strong growing with long pliable stems, bearing large trusses of small flowers as a single summer flush.

CLIMBING ROSES

Climbing roses are not self-clinging and need supports of trellis or horizontal wires to which the shoots can be tied.

  • Set the lowest wire 45cm (18in) off the ground and space subsequent wires 30cm (1ft) apart
  • If training roses up pillars, arches or pergolas, twist the main shoots gently around the uprights, keeping them as horizontal as possible, to encourage flowering shoots to form low down
  • If the main stems are slow to branch, tip-prune them to the first strong bud to encourage side shoots, otherwise leave them to fill the available space
  • Remove dead, damaged, diseased or spindly growth, and deadhead during the flowering season to encourage further flowering

Routine pruning of climbing roses

  • First remove dead, diseased or dying branches
  • Then tie in any new shoots needed to fill supports
  • Prune any flowered side shoots back by two thirds of their length
  • If the plant is heavily congested, cut out any really old branches from the base to promote new growth

Renovating overgrown climbing roses

  • Remove all dead, diseased, dying and weak shoots
  • Cut some of the old woody branches to the ground, retaining a maximum of six young, vigorous stems that can be secured to supports
  • Saw away any dead stumps at the base of the plant, where rain can collect and encourage rot
  • Shorten side shoots on the remaining branches and prune back the tips by one third to one half, to encourage branching
  • Give pruned plants a boost in the following spring by spreading a granular rose fertiliser over the soil and mulch them with a 5cm (2in) layer of garden compost or well rotted manure
