MONDRIAN'S RETREAT: ORDER WITHIN NATURE

This retreat house is conceived as Piet Mondrian's private sanctuary for solitude, reflection, and artistic creation. Situated within the mangrove ecosystem of Pulau Burong, the retreat provides a place where Mondrian can withdraw from the distractions of urban life to paint, write, and further develop the principles of De Stijl.

The concept is rooted in Mondrian's belief that beneath the apparent complexity of nature lies a universal order that can be expressed through balance, proportion, and pure relationships. While the mangrove landscape appears organic, irregular, and constantly changing through tides, wind, and ecological processes, it is governed by hidden systems and rhythms. The retreat becomes an architectural instrument that reveals this underlying order.

Inspired by the compositional language of Mondrian's paintings and the spatial qualities of his studio, the architecture is generated through a disciplined arrangement of vertical and horizontal planes. These elements establish a clear geometric framework that contrasts with, yet coexists harmoniously within, the fluid mangrove environment. Rather than dominating the site, the building is elevated lightly above the ground, allowing tidal movement, ecological continuity, and mangrove root systems to remain undisturbed.

The open-plan layout reflects both Mondrian's flexible lifestyle and the De Stijl principle of flowing space. Boundaries between living, working, and contemplative spaces are defined through shifting planes rather than enclosed rooms, creating a continuous spatial composition that encourages creativity and reflection. Framed views toward the sea, sky, birds, and mangrove canopy transform nature into a living canvas, reinforcing the connection between observation and artistic production.

Through geometry, light, proportion, and environmental sensitivity, the retreat becomes a three-dimensional expression of Neo-Plasticism. It is not simply a house inspired by Mondrian's art, but a place where architecture embodies his pursuit of harmony, transforming the hidden order of the mangrove landscape into a space for creative contemplation.
