Ceramics, Tufted Tapestry | Varied Demetions |2021
I have enjoyed, for 40+ years, a romance with clay. I have been teaching ceramics for over 20 years at American River College where my ceramic mural classes and I have installed a dozen ceramic murals across campus. My main inspiration is the human figure. My sculptures combine heads, faces, and body parts in often humorous and incongruous ways which create profound psychological and spiritual insights. Imagine how conflicted I was when around 10 years ago I started making fiber sculptures also. I had this horrible feeling that I was cheating on clay. I began with crocheting sculptures and wrapping yarn around chicken wire armatures. Then I started up-cycling old clothes combing them to create freestanding and hanging sculptures and installations. It is amazing how much the processes of ceramics and sewing up old clothes have in common. More recently I purchased a tufting gun and am adding tufted tapestries to my repertoire.
I am a founding member of E Street Gallery and Studios. I have works in collections nationally and internationally.
