SUCCESSFUL LIVESTOCK LEARNING DAY!

Hello 4-H families, my name is Josie Walstad,  Reporter for the Goats and Galore 4-H Club.

March 18th, 2023, was Livestock Learning Day!  Livestock Learning Day is about learning how to correctly care for animals, such as cats, poultry, and goats.  I attended the poultry workshop.  Some things I learned were: How you know if an egg is bad or rotten, and we learned about how good an egg needs to be to be sold at a store. We also had a guest speaker, Mr. Gerald Brockman, from the  USDA (United States Department of Agriculture). He talked about what he does and told us some facts about how eggs are sorted through the plant. Did you know that backyard flock eggs aren’t allowed at stores because of biosecurity?  The goat workshop had baby goats and the cats had a mini show.

COLORADO PURPLE UP! FOR MILITARY KIDS DAY

Please join military kid supporters around the world, on April 14, for Colorado Purple Up! For Military Kids Day.  Post photos of you and your family and colleagues, notes of appreciation and support to military kids, etc. to Facebook, Twitter,  and Instagram and use #bouldercounty4-H #MoMC #kidsservetoo #PurpleUp!Colorado #motmc #TeamMilKids #PurpleUp2023 #MOMC2023 #YoungHeroes

Frequent moves, family separations through deployments, and reintegration following deployments can make school, home, and community life challenging for military children. Yet, even in difficult circumstances, these youth continually demonstrate resilience and courage.

“Purple Up! For Military Kids” is a day to wear purple to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices.  Why purple? Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is a combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue.

4-H clubs in New Hampshire developed the “Purple Up! for Military Kids” initiative in 2011 while working with the children of deployed National Guard and reserve component members, and they saw Purple Up! as a way to build awareness in their communities.  Purple Up! is now celebrated around the world by military service branches,  the Department of Defense, governors, states, schools, businesses, and communities.

Colorado 4-H has been a proud partner of Army, Air Force, National Guard, and Reserve youth programs for over 25 years.  Thanks to the federal partnership among USDA-NIFA, the Department of Defense, and our Land Grant Universities, youth worldwide belong to 4-H.  As military families move frequently and experience the difficulties surrounding deployment and reintegration, 4-H provides predictable programming and a safe and nurturing environment for military-connected children and youth on installations to excel and belong.

Extension and 4-H are helping lead the Purple Up! for Military Kids efforts in Colorado by having county commissioners sign special proclamations, producing purple STEM videos and posting them to the State 4-H website, wearing purple, asking schools to wear purple that day, hosting a FB live panel of military parents and kids, social media blasts and more.

Please join us in celebrating  Purple Up! Day.  Military kids serve too!

FOODS AND NUTRITION TIPS

April is a great month to practice your Foods and Nutrition project dishes.  Whether you celebrate Passover, Easter, Eid al Fitr, Earth Day, a mix of those, or have other reasons to be grateful, food is typically a way to start or end a celebration. That's because food can nourish you; physically, mentally, and emotionally. Below is a recipe that will help you celebrate, feel nourished, and stay healthy.

WALNUT-CACAO TRUFFLES:

Ingredients (makes 3-4 truffles):

½ cup walnuts, chopped

½ TBSP raw cacao powder

½ TBSP maple syrup

½ TBSP coconut oil

Instructions:

Heat the coconut oil and raw cacao in a pan to melt it slightly, then pour that mixture into a blender and add the walnuts. Blend all the ingredients with maple syrup and add more to taste if needed.  Roll this dough into bite sized truffle like treats (with wet hands so the dough doesn't stick to you), or crumble it on top of baked apples or ice cream as a crunchy and yummy topping.

You can make these truffles with any nut and/or shredded coconut.  You can also use pitted  & soaked dates as a sweetener instead of maple syrup.

DOG NEWS

The Newest Addition to the Boulder County Fair

By: Alessia Daelli - 4x4 Dog Club Reporter

This year is the first year that Boulder County will have Dog Agility at the County Fair. There will be around 10 dogs participating in Agility this year. Training has been taking place behind Barn A. There will be a few different volunteers helping with Agility this year. Agility was unable to happen in the past because we didn’t have the equipment quite yet. In Agility there are many different levels. This year’s Agility Contest will have dogs participating in the Jumpers level which includes jumps and tunnels. The requirements to be able to participate are to have off-leash control of your dog and pass the heeling pre-test. Agility is a very fun discipline to watch because it is high in energy,  and fast and all of the dogs are very happy. Different agility courses include, but are not limited to, jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and teeter-totters. The one level that the county is offering this year, Jumpers, has a variety of jumps and tunnels. I hope you attend the Agility Contest on August 2nd

ANIMAL CARE AND HOUSING FORMS

Animal Care and Houseing forms are now completed in 4-H Online; members must only submit a hard copy of the Animal Care and Housing form by the designated ownership date ONLY if they WILL NOT be housing the animals at the address listed in 4-H online. The hard copy forms must have all appropriate signatures.

DAIRY STEER PROGRAM

Boulder County 4-H 2 year Dairy Steer Program (DSP)

The 4-H Dairy Cattle program is offering new classes. It promotes another side of the Dairy project. Learn how this project enters into our food chain other than with milk products.

The dairy sector contributed 5.6 billion pounds (21 percent) of beef to the U.S. commercial beef supply.  Since 2002, the percentage of dairy beef contribution to the total U.S. beef supply has ranged from 18 to 24 percent.

Dairy steers are well known for their ability to produce the highest quality grades of beef

(Prime and High Choice cuts).

See Additional information & rules also on county

web site

Did you know that you can also do the Dairy Cattle Project and learn all the aspects of the dairy industry without you ever having to milk her?

You can start with a calf and exhibit the same heifer for 2 years (2 fairs) by following the DHRP (Dairy Heifer Replacement Program) rules & guidelines. You will also have an opportunity to sell your heifer through the Livestock Sale once she’s bred (check the rules),  knowing that she will carry on in life as a producing cow. You could even apply to the Ag Youth Loan Program where you can purchase a calf for the 2yr program or you can purchase a bred yearling that you can sell at the 2023 fair. You must have possession & ownership by the last Thursday in April (animal ID deadline) along with turning in the DHRP nomination form to 4-H office. If the idea of selling a dairy heifer interests you, please check out the DHRP rules and guidelines especially prior to purchasing a new heifer for this program. For more information about these programs or on the Dairy Cattle Project itself, even help in finding a dairy heifer, or a bull calf for the new class. Call Tina Pohlmann (303) 828-3789.

PURCHASING MARKET ANIMALS FOR YOUR 4-H PROJECTS

It's time to think about purchasing your next market animal! When it comes to purchasing animals for a 4-H project, as always, purchasing any animal is up to the family's discretion. Things you may want to consider include: personal finances, current market prices, feed prices, and costs for overall care.

As we approach the new 4-H year, make sure that you discuss as a family what animal and how many animals you would like to purchase! We recommend consulting the Market Animal Budget Planner to help guide your discussions.
