Applied Rhetoric Collaborative

2o22 ARC Summer Symposium

The 2022 ARC Summer Symposium will take place June 17 and 18 in Provo, UT, and online.

The symposium will be held at the Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo. We hope you’ll be able to join us in person, but we’re working with the Convention Center staff to ensure that virtual attendees can experience the symposium in as much detail as possible. Each presentation room will have its own dedicated camera person and video conference software, so virtual attendees can not only watch the presentations but also be actively involved in the discussion.

Registration:

Please register for the symposium here by May 1, 2022. The registration fee for both in-person and virtual attendees is a steal at just $50, thanks to the generous support of the Brigham Young University College of Humanities.

Hotel:

The conference hotel is the Best Western Plus University Inn, 1600 N Freedom Blvd in Provo. The conference rate is $159/night for either a double queen or a king room. To book your room, call 801-373-2222 and ask for the Applied Rhetoric Symposium rate. As of 4/19, the corporate booking line does not have the symposium rate in their system, so you will likely need to book through the local number.

The hotel is 1.5 miles from the Utah Valley Convention Center. It is very walkable, but it is also on the main bus route. We will also have a shuttle running in the morning and evening between the hotel and the conference venue.

We look forward to seeing you in June! The conference program will be posted soon.

What is the Applied Rhetoric Collaborative?

The Applied Rhetoric Collaborative is an ongoing gathering of people who enact a particular type of rhetorical work (applied rhetoric) in their professional and/or non-professional spaces. The ARC offers a para-professional space for support, feedback, collaboration, and encouragement to those who seek to solve problems and achieve positive ends in communities. These meetings are held via a yearly symposium and ongoing digital connections.

Applied rhetoric: Our evolving definition of applied rhetoric is that it is a rhetorically-grounded method for and study of action-oriented research, teaching, and service in live situations that seeks to solve problems and achieve positive ends in communities.

ARC History: In June 2018, an interdisciplinary group of scholars from across the U.S. gathered to discuss the characteristics that link their work. We determined that this link was the application of rhetoric to problems at work, in our classrooms, in our communities, and in our public and private lives. We envisioned a new professional organization that might give us a place to have conversations that cross existing disciplinary lines. We met again in May 2019 and continued to refine our understanding of applied rhetoric and the many ways it can be a force for good in the world. The 2020 symposia began online but was eventually put on hold.
