What does joining A.P.P.L.E. entail?

Joining A.P.P.L.E is a great way to stay abreast of policy discussions and changes being made at the state level that impact your student and family. We will provide you with information about key issues and you can decide if you want to write a letter to your legislator, participate in a meeting with your legislators, or call into a hearing. Some issues may be more important to you than others and you can be as involved in the group as you like! We are looking for parents who are interested in helping to organize other parents in their region. If you are interested, please send us an email at applealliance.ca@gmail.com

Why do parents/guardians need to be involved in advocacy?

While we would hope that all organizational interests that influence legislators and other elected officials place what is in the best interests of children as their top priority, unfortunately it is not the case. There are powerful special interest groups that place money, power, and control of our public education system well ahead of what is in the best interests of both parents and children. Parents/Guardians need to take an active role in standing up and defending their rights and their children's right to public school choice and a quality public education.

I haven't participated in advocacy efforts before. I'm not sure what is required or what to say.

That is what A.P.P.L.E. is for! We'll make it easy for parents/guardians to make their voices heard. This includes providing action alerts about key decision points, sample letters and suggested talking points.

What types of issues is A.P.P.L.E. engaged on?

A.P.P.L.E may engage in policies that limit state funding for public charter school students, cap enrollment at Personalize Learning public charter schools, and make it difficult for families to choose the best education for their child.

Will there be meetings or just communication via email?

We will have a kick off meeting (TBD in person or over Zoom) and hope to plan periodic in-person meetings with parents who live near each other but for the most part information about key legislation and action alerts will be sent via email or text.
