If you want the most seamless integration with your Apple ecosystem and superior spatial audio, choose Apple AirPods Max; if you need exceptional battery life, broader device compatibility, and a lighter frame for all-day wear, choose Bowers & Wilkins Px7.
• Apple AirPods Max: Offers industry-leading computational audio and automatic switching between Apple devices, but carries a heavier 2-pound weight that can be demanding for larger frames.
• Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3: Delivers 30 hours of battery life and a refined lightweight design specifically engineered for comfort across different head shapes, though it lacks the deep ecosystem automation of Apple's chip.
• Best For: Choose the Apple option if you live entirely within the iPhone/iPad/Mac world and prioritize immersive soundscapes; pick the Bowers & Wilkins model if you need long-lasting power, a lighter feel for extended sessions, or are looking for headphones for big heads who find heavy cans uncomfortable.
The Apple AirPods Max are built for the listener who wants their gear to disappear into their digital life. The defining feature here is the Apple H1 chip, which works in tandem with the custom acoustic design to deliver what they call an "ultimate over-ear listening experience." This isn't just about volume; it's about how the sound moves around you. With Personalized Spatial Audio and dynamic head tracking, the headphones create a sense of place that feels like the music is coming from speakers in the room rather than drivers pressed against your ears. If you watch movies in Dolby Atmos or listen to select songs mixed for this format, the difference is stark. The ability to pair these simply by placing them near your device and tapping connect makes the setup frictionless, provided you own an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
For the user who values immersion above almost everything else, the Active Noise Cancellation on the AirPods Max is designed to remove up to twice as much background noise as previous generations. This allows you to focus entirely on what is playing without fighting the environment. Transparency mode is equally robust, letting you hear the world around you comfortably when you need to interact with people or stay aware of your surroundings. The physical design relies on an acoustic-first approach, utilizing a knit-mesh canopy and memory foam ear cushions intended to create a perfect seal. This seal is crucial for the high-fidelity performance of the Apple-designed dynamic driver, ensuring that no sound leaks out and nothing gets in.

However, this premium experience comes with a specific physical trade-off. At two pounds, these are among the heaviest headphones on the market. While the memory foam and mesh canopy are luxurious, the total mass can become noticeable during long listening sessions, particularly for those with larger head sizes who might find the clamping force or weight distribution challenging after several hours. They also come in five distinct colors, each with a matching smart case, which adds to the aesthetic appeal but contributes to the overall bulk. You should buy the AirPods Max if you demand the best possible integration with Apple hardware and want the most advanced spatial audio available today. You should skip them if you prioritize ultra-lightweight construction, need battery life beyond a day, or frequently switch between Android and iOS devices where the automatic switching magic won't work.
The Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 is engineered for the person who listens for hours and cares deeply about the purity of the source material. These headphones feature 40mm drivers paired with a 24-bit DSP, a combination designed to render sound with richness, depth, and precision true to the artist's vision. Unlike many competitors that rely solely on software processing, the Px7 S3 uses aptX Lossless and aptX Adaptive support to dynamically optimize performance and connection between the headphones and your music source. This ensures incredible clarity whether you are streaming compressed files or high-resolution tracks. The inclusion of eight precision-tuned microphones focuses heavily on capturing crystal clear call quality while simultaneously blocking out distractions, making it a strong candidate for professionals who take frequent calls in noisy environments.
Comfort is clearly a primary engineering goal for this model. The manufacturer explicitly states that the headphones are designed to provide a comfortable fit for differing head shapes. They utilize plush memory foam ear cushions, a refined lightweight headband, and an elegant fabric finish to achieve what they describe as their most comfortable fit yet. This attention to ergonomics suggests that the weight, listed at 0.3 kg (roughly 0.66 pounds), is distributed more effectively than in heavier rivals. If you are searching for headphones for big heads, the lighter chassis and adjustable nature of the Px7 S3 offer a significant advantage over heavier alternatives that might cause fatigue. The battery life further cements its position as a travel and daily commute companion, offering up to 30 hours of playback on a single charge. A quick 15-minute charge provides seven hours of listening, which is ideal for the unpredictable schedules of modern commuters and travelers.
The Px7 S3 also offers flexibility through the Bowers & Wilkins Music app. This tool puts you in control, allowing you to fine-tune every note with a 5-band EQ, adjust noise cancellation settings based on your surroundings, and manage voice control preferences. This level of customization appeals to audiophiles who want to shape the sound signature to their liking rather than accepting a factory preset. The build includes a protective case and cables for both USB-C and 3.5mm wired connections, ensuring you aren't left stranded if the battery dies or wireless interference occurs. You should choose the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 if you value long battery life, a lightweight design suitable for extended wear, and the ability to customize your audio profile. You might consider skipping it if you require the specific ecosystem conveniences of Apple's automatic device switching or if you prefer the unique spatial audio implementation found only in the Apple lineup.

• Best for Build Materials → Tie: Both use premium materials; Apple chooses aluminum and stainless steel with a knit mesh, while Bowers & Wilkins opts for fabric, foam, and plastic for a lighter feel.
• Best for Travel Convenience → Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3: The lighter weight and longer battery make it less burdensome to carry and use throughout a full day of transit.
After weighing the specifications and design philosophies, I would personally buy the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3. While the Apple AirPods Max offer undeniable technological prowess, the sheer weight of two pounds is a dealbreaker for me during long listening sessions, especially given my preference for comfort. The Bowers & Wilkins model solves the common pain point of heavy headphones by delivering a featherlight 0.3 kg frame that still sounds rich and detailed. Its 30-hour battery life means I rarely have to think about charging, and the aptX Adaptive support ensures I get high-quality audio regardless of my source. For anyone, including those with big heads, looking for a balance of premium sound and physical comfort, the Px7 S3 is the smarter choice. It proves you don't need to sacrifice audio fidelity for a lighter, more practical design.
Yes, the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 is specifically noted for its design to accommodate differing head shapes with a lightweight, comfortable fit. The Apple AirPods Max are also well-regarded for their memory foam seal, but the lighter weight of the Px7 makes it generally more comfortable for extended wear on larger frames.
Both models include necessary cables in the box. The Bowers & Wilkins package includes a 1.2m USB-C to 3.5mm stereo jack cable and a USB-C to USB-C cable, while the Apple AirPods Max includes a USB-C charging cable. Both allow for wired connectivity if you prefer not to use Bluetooth.
The Apple AirPods Max are marketed as having pro-level Active Noise Cancellation that removes up to 2x more background noise, leveraging the H1 chip for computational audio. The Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 features Adaptive Noise Cancellation with eight microphones focused on blocking distractions, but Apple's implementation is generally considered more aggressive in silent isolation.
Absolutely. The Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 supports standard Bluetooth 5 and aptX codecs, making it fully compatible with Android phones, Windows laptops, and other non-Apple ecosystems. The Apple AirPods Max will pair with any Bluetooth device, but you lose the automatic switching and spatial audio personalization features when not using an Apple product.
