MetaMask does not use a traditional username-and-password login for accessing a self-custodial wallet. Instead, wallet access is protected through the MetaMask extension or app, your wallet password, and—when required—your Secret Recovery Phrase for wallet recovery.
To access MetaMask securely:
Open the authentic MetaMask extension or official application.
Confirm that you are using the genuine MetaMask software.
Unlock your wallet using the password you established during setup.
Review your wallet accounts and network information.
When connecting to a decentralized application, review the connection request carefully.
Approve only transactions and requests that you understand.
MetaMask is a self-custodial wallet, meaning users are responsible for protecting their wallet credentials and recovery information.
Your Secret Recovery Phrase is particularly sensitive. Anyone who obtains it may be able to restore the wallet and control its associated assets.
Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase with anyone. Do not enter it into a website, online form, chat, email, or support request.
Scammers may create websites that imitate MetaMask and display fake login, verification, or wallet-recovery screens. These pages may attempt to collect passwords, private keys, or Secret Recovery Phrases.
MetaMask should not require you to provide your Secret Recovery Phrase simply to unlock an existing wallet through the normal extension interface.
Before entering any information, verify that you are using the official MetaMask software.
When you connect MetaMask to a decentralized application, review the requested permissions and make sure you recognize the website. A connection request does not necessarily mean that a transaction is being authorized.
Before approving a transaction, carefully review the recipient, amount, network, and other details presented by MetaMask.
If you cannot unlock MetaMask, verify that you are using the correct wallet password and the authentic MetaMask application or extension.
For wallet recovery, use only the official recovery process. Never send your Secret Recovery Phrase to another person claiming to provide technical support.
MetaMask provides users with direct control over their Web3 wallet accounts. Safe usage depends on protecting your recovery information, using genuine software, checking dApp connections, and reviewing every transaction before approval.
Your Secret Recovery Phrase is not a normal login password. Never share it with anyone or enter it into a website.
