Meet the ApexCARES Team!
We are a team dedicated to improving the lives of residents in SL and TLC homes at Apex Harmony Lodge by fostering deeper understanding between caregivers and those living with dementia. At its core, our project seeks to ease the daily struggles of both nurses and residents—bridging language gaps, lightening the emotional load on staff, and creating moments of clarity and connection. By focusing on empathy, communication, and dignity, we aim to make dementia care not just more efficient, but more human.
Simplifying Care, Strengthening Bonds!
Teo Wen Pin, Felix
Hi, my name is Felix, and I am the Machine Learning Engineer for this team. My primary objective has been to architect and deploy two key machine learning functionalities into the ApexCares Mobile application to ensure their seamless integration and optimal performance. Slurred Speech to Text Transcription and Translation: To address this critical feature, a rigorous comparative analysis was performed on a range of leading AI models, including various open-source solutions from Hugging Face and GitHub, Gemini 2.5, and models from OpenAI. The evaluation benchmarked transcription accuracy, translation fidelity, and latency. The results identified GPT-4o-Audio-preview as the most robust model, providing the highest quality end-to-end service. AI Suggestion Service for Apex Virtual Assistance: To empower nurses with actionable insights, I have implemented an AI service using a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture. This system grounds the GPT-4o Large Language Model with our internal, trusted database. This integration ensures that the suggestions provided are not only intelligent but also curated, factually accurate, and specific to the residents' profiles, even when initial information is sparse. The effective leverage of these state-of-the-art AI technologies reinforces our confidence in the application's overall performance and its ability to deliver significant value to our users.
Duana Goh Rui En
Hi, my name is Duana, and I am the UI/UX Designer and Frontend Engineer for this team. My primary responsibility has been to shape the overall aesthetics and user experience of our platform, ensuring that every interaction feels both intuitive and engaging. I design with tools such as Figma, Canva, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop, translating creative vision into cohesive visual systems.
By linking Figma prototypes to detailed interaction flows, I make sure our designs clearly convey intended user behaviors to the development team. My design process is grounded in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) principles, with a strong emphasis on usability, accessibility, and meaningful user engagement.
In addition to design, I also contribute to the frontend implementation of our web application, leveraging my skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to bring interfaces to life with both precision and creativity. This combination of design thinking and technical execution ensures that our product is not only functional but also a pleasure to use.
Pritikaa Prabhu
Hi, I’m Pritikaa! In this project, I primarily took on the role of Backend Engineer. My main responsibility was to develop and maintain the APIs that powered ApexCARES while ensuring smooth integration between the learning engine and the frontend of our virtual assistant, AVA. I also managed the database by designing tables, handling records, and ensuring data integrity with PostgreSQL. Our APIs were built using Node.js and Express, and tested thoroughly with Postman to debug and verify functionality. This role gave me the opportunity to strengthen my technical skills while contributing to a solution that truly supports caregivers in their daily work.
Oh Wei Kiat, Isaac
Hi, I’m Isaac! In this project, I served as a Backend Engineer with a focus on system integration and deployment. My primary responsibility was to ensure seamless communication between the mobile application frontend and our backend services, making sure that data flowed smoothly across the different components of ApexCARES. I also took charge of deploying our PostgreSQL database to the cloud, ensuring scalability, reliability, and secure access for the entire system. This role allowed me to deepen my expertise in backend–frontend integration and cloud deployment, while playing a key part in making ApexCARES a robust and accessible tool for caregivers.
Aiman Hazim
Hey, I’m Aiman, and I am the Frontend Engineer for team ApexCARES. My primary responsibility has been to design and implement the user-facing components of the ApexCares Mobile application, ensuring a seamless, responsive, and accessible experience for the nurses at Apex Harmony Lodge. Using React Native, I built the core interface to be intuitive and consistent across devices, while keeping it flexible enough for rapid iterations based on user feedback.
To support fast prototyping and real-device testing, I leveraged Expo Go, which streamlined our development workflow and enabled the team to quickly validate design decisions and functionality in real-world use cases. This ensured that critical features—such as AI-powered speech-to-text transcription and translation and the Apex Virtual Assistant—were integrated smoothly into the app’s interface without compromising usability.
By combining modern cross-platform frameworks with user-centric design principles, I delivered a frontend that not only fulfils functional requirements but also strengthens the team’s mission of equipping healthcare professionals with tools that are reliable, accessible, and easy to use in high-stakes environments.
