Durante siglos, las matemáticas se han hecho con papel, lápiz y largas conversaciones frente a una pizarra (¡y mucho café!). Hoy tienen, por primera vez, un interlocutor nuevo: la inteligencia artificial. En esta charla exploraremos qué significa realmente demostrar algo en el siglo XXI, cuando los ordenadores no sólo calculan, sino que proponen ideas, descubren fórmulas y encuentran algoritmos que nadie había imaginado. Hablaremos de cómo estas herramientas están empezando a cambiar la forma en que se hace investigación matemática, y también de lo que la máquina todavía no sabe hacer: formular buenas preguntas, reconocer la belleza de una demostración, decidir qué merece la pena entender. No hacen falta conocimientos previos, solo curiosidad.

The lecture by Prof. Gómez-Serrano will take place at 19:00, Wednesday, September 2nd and the language of the lecture will be Spanish. The event is open to the general public and will take place at the Auditorium of the Guggenheim museum (Maximum capacity: 300 people), and it will count with the presence of Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, the Minister of Science, Universities and Innovation of the Basque Government.

Javier Gómez-Serrano (Madrid, 1985) is a Spanish mathematician who earned his PhD at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2013 and is now a Professor of Mathematics at Brown University — after positions at Princeton and the University of Barcelona. Javier has teamed up with Google DeepMind to try to solve one of the most famous problems in mathematics: the existence and smoothness of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. Formulated in the 19th century, the system of equations describe the motion of fluids like water and air, yet two centuries later it remains unknown whether their solutions always stay regular or can suddenly "blow up."
