This semester, our team is focused on addressing the challenges parents face in caring for their babies, particularly in managing sleep disruptions. Our goal is to improve parents' well-being by making their lives easier and helping them get more consistent rest.
Specifically, we are targeting the regulation of sleep patterns in parents by providing solutions that promote better sleep for their babies. By addressing this key issue, we aim to alleviate the stress and exhaustion that often come with sleepless nights, enabling parents to feel more energized and capable throughout the day.
Relevant existing solutions
Cribs/Sleep Systems
Provides a safe sleeping environment, preventing the baby from falling to the ground.
Difficult for shorter parents to use, as it requires bending down to place or lift the child, which can be especially challenging for mothers recovering from childbirth.
Baby Monitors
Enables 24/7 monitoring, giving parents peace of mind by keeping an eye on their baby remotely.
Heavily reliant on electricity and prone to damage, which can compromise its reliability.
Swaddles
Provides comfort to babies by simulating the snugness of the womb.
Velcro closures make them easy to use, and they come in a variety of styles.
Limited size options for newborns, making proper sizing crucial to avoid safety hazards like suffocation.
Breastfeeding Covers
Offers privacy and comfort for mothers while breastfeeding in public or at home.
Available in different fabrics and styles for ease of use and baby comfort.
Some covers can be too warm or restrictive for the baby, causing discomfort during feeding.
Lack of adjustable sizing or versatility for different breastfeeding positions.
Our project addresses the needs of new parents and childcare professionals, including babysitters, nannies, and au pairs. These groups are all connected by the shared responsibility of caring for infants, particularly when it comes to sleep routines and mobility.
Parents
The primary users of our solution, parents, face the challenge of sleepless nights and difficulty finding time to socialize or engage in activities outside the home. Their well-being is tied closely to their baby’s sleep patterns, and this lack of rest can affect their mental and physical health.
Childcare Professionals
Babysitters, nannies, and au pairs play a critical role in alleviating parental stress, but they too face challenges, such as managing a baby’s sleep schedule. Their ability to successfully care for the child directly influences the parents’ comfort in leaving the house.
Parents expect convenience, peace of mind, and reliable solutions to improve their baby's sleep routine and allow for more flexibility in their lives. Their main concern is ensuring the safety and well-being of their child while they are away or trying to rest.
Childcare Professionals expect tools that simplify their responsibilities, especially around sleep schedules. They are concerned with ensuring they meet parental expectations and that they have the resources to calm and comfort the baby.
Parents and childcare professionals influence each other through trust. Parents rely on caregivers to maintain consistent routines and keep their child safe. Childcare professionals, in turn, depend on parents for clear instructions and expectations. A solution that meets both groups' needs will strengthen this relationship by providing a shared sense of confidence and ease.
By addressing these pain points—difficulty in putting babies to sleep and leaving the house with a baby—our goal is to create a product that improves parental comfort in leaving their child at home, enhances their social and physical activities, and ultimately supports their mental health.
