Civil Leadership Development Program

NORTH TEXAS APAPA INTERNSHIP/EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

North Texas APAPA is working to build a pipeline of youth invested in civic engagement. We see civic interests and engagement as the medium to building advocacy and empowerment in the Asian communities. Our program provides young adults the opportunity to actively participate in civic and public affairs processes such as voting in both local and national elections, volunteering for voter’s registration events, for campaigns, working in elections and with elected officials.

CIVIC LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Our Civic Leadership Program is designed to prepare high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to become future civic leaders. NTC program provides students with an opportunity to develop their leadership skills, gain public policy experience and become civically engaged participants in our community. Upon program completion, applications will develop:

● Professional and leadership qualities

● Networking & team building skills with fellow interns

● Political awareness and civic engagement

● Further understanding of Texas government

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants will be selected based on, but not limited to, his/her demonstrated leadership knowledge and skills, participation in community service, exhibiting excellent interpersonal skills, with strong written and verbal communication skills.

PROGRAM LENGTH AND STIPEND

Recipients will attend both orientation and training prior to placement. This is a four (4) weeks (minimum 100 hours) internship/externship program. Interns/Externs will receive a stipend in the amount of $750 for successful completion of our program. Students are responsible for their own housing, transportation, and insurance.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

● Must be a U.S. Citizen, or permanent resident, and a Texas resident.

● A current student: high school senior, undergraduate or graduate student.

● Empathetic, outgoing, socially mature, and emotionally stable.

● Strong time management, leadership, small-group facilitation, collaboration, and communication skills.

● Must commit to work four (4) weeks minimum, in an assigned office.

● Must commit to at least 20 volunteer hours for NTC activities (attend workshops authorized by NTC (orientation, leadership training, meetings, public speaking, dinner socials, project assignments and guest speakers, voter’s registration and election project, and participate fully in the summer internship program).

● Must prioritize NTC paid internship/externship, and limit other work or activities and commitments to a minimum while participating in the program.
