I have been using the natbib package with the apalike bibliography style. However, I am not entirely happy with some details of this style, and wanted to try my hands on a customised version. Thus, I looked up the apalike.bst file, made a copy of it (myapalike.bst), and changed the preamble:

The problem is that none of the changes that I make to myapalike.bst has any effect when I compile. I have tried numerous solutions (compiling multiple times, refreshing the FNDB, moving the .bst file to the folder in which my .tex file is), but nothing works. I really have no clue what's going on.

Save the file myapalike.bst either in the directory where your main tex file is located or in a directory that's searched by BibTeX. If you choose the second option, you will likely also need to update the filename database of your TeX distribution. And, change the argument of the \bibliographystyle instruction from apalike to myapalike.

Copy the apalike.bst file and paste it where the required .tex and .bib files are located. Rename it, (say) myapalike.bst. For editing, open the myapalike.bst using some text editor (I used notepad). Search for FUNCTION {output.year.check}.Now modify it as follows:

I made apalike-german.bst because I was forced to use plain old BibTe in conjunction with apalike.bst but I needed German localization. It is simply a copy of the original file. My editions concern the following: ff782bc1db
