Topic: Misunderstanding towards Herbal Remedies among young people in Malaysia.

Wider Context:

For millennia, people have healed with herbal or animal-derived remedies, using knowledge

handed down through generations. Traditional medicine is one of these remedies, which

used for prevention and treatment diseases. Different cultures have their own kind of

traditional medicines/treatment for specific diseases. This is usually closely related to the

geographical, location and weather, which affect the growth of plants and animals. Despite

(Chenglong, 2017) the existence of modern medicine, traditional medicines are still existing

and used by many people today. In most developed countries, traditional medicines are

mostly rejected due to the specific reasons. The advantages of traditional medicines are

often overlooked by consumers.

In Malaysia, we have different kind of traditional medicines/remedies due to the multi

cultural aspect. In this project, I will be focusing on Chinese Medicine, one of the widely

used traditional medicines. Traditional Chinese Medicines can usually be found in Chinese

Herb Shops and modern pharmacies in Malaysia. These medicines are approved by the

Malaysia government healthcare council. However, the establishment of modern medicines

in the last decade has made the sale of traditional medicines fall drastically. Youngsters

today often prefer Modern Medicines products than Traditional Medicines products. They

believe that traditional medicine is ineffective and dangerous due to the ingredients used to

create it. On the other hand, some senior citizens prefer traditional medicines due to the

long-time exposure to it. The lack of understanding on traditional medicines have caused

more patients to drop them and never try them.
