AP English Language and Composition is an introductory college-level composition course. Students cultivate their understanding of writing and rhetorical arguments through reading, analyzing, and writing texts as they explore topics like rhetorical situation, claims and evidence, reasoning and organization, and style.

There are 23-25 reading questions and 20-22 writing questions

Essay One: Synthesis
Given an issue and six to eight documents
Write an argumentative essay with support from documents
Essay Two: Rhetorical Analysis
Given an excerpt from a nonfiction piece
Write an essay analyzing the rhetorical strategies used to construct the passage's argument
Essay Three: Argument
Given an issue
Write a persuasive essay while taking a position on the issue
The Multiple Choice section of the exam is worth 45% of your score, and the Essay Questions section is worth 55% of your score.
Each free response essay is worth about 18% of your score.
Each Free Response Question is given a score from 0-6
Thesis (0-1) - Thesis needs to properly respond to the given prompt
Evidence and Commentary (0-4) - Essay must include supporting evidence and analysis that is relevant, specific, well organized, and supports the thesis
Sophistication (0-1) - Essay must be well-crafted and show sufficient understanding of prompt
