We discussed "Miss Brill" using the notes from the AP videos we watched on Wednesday. You should have watched the videos on SETTING, PLOT STRUCTURE, and POINT OF VIEW. I have added three more videos on how to construct a DEFENSIBLE CLAIM, LINE OF REASONING,and use SUPPORTING CLAIMS. I highly recommend that you watch these for homework.
We practiced another multiple choice exam question using PLICKERS. Next week, we will write another composition on a sight reading of a short story AND do a multiple choice practice as well.

We finished discussing "The Story of an Hour," which included watching 2 AP videos on characterization and perspective. I have assigned 3 more videos for you to watch at home. These go over setting , plot structure, and point of view.
We read "Miss Brill" (264), but we ran out of time to discuss it, so we shall do so on Friday. I've uploaded a copy of the story on today's thread on Teams. Look at the story using the notes we made on the two videos we watched in class. We will discuss your findings next class.

We went over the key concepts you are expected to understand when dealing with short fiction. The powerpoint summarizing the key points is on today's thread on Teams. I will also assign the corresponding videos on the AP website for your viewing pleasure should you want to hear more discussion on these key points.
We read and discussed "Just Lather, That's All" and applied the above notes to our observations of the story. Then we read "The Story of an Hour" and are in the midst of discussing this story. We will carry on with Kate Chopin's story next class.

Monday, Sept. 28th
We did our second multiple choice practice today. You're doing well!
We finished discussing "The Destructors" and wrote a THESIS STATEMENT on the story. This should have been posted to today's thread on Teams.
We started going over SYNTAX and will be applying what we've learned to our writing.
Next class, you will be practicing a "free response" question from the AP exam. It's like the multiple choice questions where you read a passage and answer questions, but this time, you do so in paragraph form.
Wednesday, Sept. 23rd
We briefly went over the DICTION letters, and then we started discussing "The Destructors." We got into groups and looked for quotations from the story relating to EXISTENTIALISM/NIHILISM, GANGS, LEADERSHIP, and HISTORICAL CONTEXT. We are in the middle of sharing our findings and will continue with this next class.
Monday, Sept. 21st
We wrote out a quotation from a character in the INDEPENDENT NOVEL. With others who are reading the same novel, you discussed what this one line reveals about the character. You also wrote some notes on CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES. You identified the LEVEL OF DICTION this character uses.
We then finished going over DICTION and wrote a complaint letter demonstrating FORMAL STANDARD and SUBSTANDARD DICTION.
After this, we brainstormed on gangs, leadership, existentialism, and nihilism. Then we began reading "The Destructors" (157). A copy of the story has been uploaded to today's thread on Teams. Please finish reading the story for homework. We shall be discussing "The Destructors" next class.
Thursday, Sept. 17th
We discussed how to write a defensible claim and support it with LITERARY FEATURES from the text. This included an AP video on how to construct a paragraph on the third person narrator in "The Lottery." We reviewed key SHORT STORY TERMS, and then we did an AP Multiple Choice practice. We will do LOTS of these so that by the time the exam rolls around, it will be old hat for you.
We started going over the element of style called DICTION and will finish this next class.
Tuesday, Sept. 15th
We read and discussed "The Lottery," noting the TONE, TONE SHIFT, names of the characters, and IRONY. We wrote a DEFENSIBLE CLAIM on the story and will finish discussing this next class (as we were interrupted by the photos).

Friday, Sept. 11th
We finished discussing the Labour Day essay, which included looking at "The Second Coming" and apply this poem to the essay. We watched AP video on constructing a DEFENSIBLE CLAIM, and then we practiced writing one on the Labour Day essay, along with 3 supporting quotations. This should have been uploaded to the assignment on Teams.
We did an introduction to the elements of style, focusing on TONE today. We will carry on with this on Tuesday.

Wednesday, Sept. 9th
We did a brief introduction to the course (please refer to the course outline posted on Teams), which included going over the Exam format and choosing a novel for the Independent Novel study. Please start reading. You have until the end of April to read as many novels as you have time to read. We wrote a writing sample. Then after brainstorming on Labour Day, we read the Labour Day essay, highlighting the IMAGERY. We will continue discussing this essay on Friday. Please bring your copy of the essay with you.
