Monday, Sept. 21st
We wrote out a quotation from a character in the INDEPENDENT NOVEL. With others who are reading the same novel, you discussed what this one line reveals about the character. You also wrote some notes on CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES. You identified the LEVEL OF DICTION this character uses.
We then finished going over DICTION and wrote a complaint letter demonstrating FORMAL STANDARD and SUBSTANDARD DICTION.
After this, we brainstormed on gangs, leadership, existentialism, and nihilism. Then we began reading "The Destructors" (157). A copy of the story has been uploaded to today's thread on Teams. Please finish reading the story for homework. We shall be discussing "The Destructors" next class.
Thursday, Sept. 17th
We discussed how to write a defensible claim and support it with LITERARY FEATURES from the text. This included an AP video on how to construct a paragraph on the third person narrator in "The Lottery." We reviewed key SHORT STORY TERMS, and then we did an AP Multiple Choice practice. We will do LOTS of these so that by the time the exam rolls around, it will be old hat for you.
We started going over the element of style called DICTION and will finish this next class.
Tuesday, Sept. 15th
We read and discussed "The Lottery," noting the TONE, TONE SHIFT, names of the characters, and IRONY. We wrote a DEFENSIBLE CLAIM on the story and will finish discussing this next class (as we were interrupted by the photos).

Friday, Sept. 11th
We finished discussing the Labour Day essay, which included looking at "The Second Coming" and apply this poem to the essay. We watched AP video on constructing a DEFENSIBLE CLAIM, and then we practiced writing one on the Labour Day essay, along with 3 supporting quotations. This should have been uploaded to the assignment on Teams.
We did an introduction to the elements of style, focusing on TONE today. We will carry on with this on Tuesday.

Wednesday, Sept. 9th
We did a brief introduction to the course (please refer to the course outline posted on Teams), which included going over the Exam format and choosing a novel for the Independent Novel study. Please start reading. You have until the end of April to read as many novels as you have time to read. We wrote a writing sample. Then after brainstorming on Labour Day, we read the Labour Day essay, highlighting the IMAGERY. We will continue discussing this essay on Friday. Please bring your copy of the essay with you.
