Curriculum

The Academy of Finance at Coral Gables Senior High School is a magnet academy and member of the National Academy Foundation (NAF), a leader in the movement to prepare students for college and career success. NAF’s Academy of Finance connects high school students with the world of financial services, offering a curriculum that covers entrepreneurship, banking and credit, financial planning, international finance, securities, insurance, accounting, and economics, among other topics. It follows a proven educational model that includes industry focused curricula, work based learning experiences and business partner expertise.

Students in the Academy of Finance get to choose a pathway based on their interest. They can either choose the Finance Stand or the Business Strand.

They will choose the strand their 9th grade year.

FINANCE STRAND

Intro to IT

9th Grade

The Introduction to Information Technology course provides an overview of information technology (IT) today and introduces students to the basics of hardware and software. Students examine hardware components including peripherals, connectors, and memory.

Accounting Applications

10th Grade

Accounting Applications 1 provides students with an understanding of the accounting process and how it facilitates decision making by providing data and information to internal and external stakeholders. Students learn that accounting is an integral part of all business activities.

Banking / Financial Operations

11th Grade

Banking / Financial Operations introduces students to the financial world. Students develop financial literacy as they learn about the function of finance in society. They study income and wealth; examine financial institutions; learn how businesses raise capital; and study key investment-related terms and concepts.

Personal Finance Planning

12th Grade

Personal Finance Planning provides students with an overview of the job of a financial planner. Students learn to consider how all aspects of financial planning might affect a potential client, and learn about the importance of financial planning in helping people reach their life goals.

BUsiness STRAND

Entrepreneurship (NFTE)

10th Grade

In NFTE’s (Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship) Entrepreneurship 1 course, students use their entrepreneurial skills and mindset to evolve an innovative solution to a problem into a validated business opportunity.

Accounting Applications

11th Grade

Accounting Applications 1 provides students with an understanding of the accounting process and how it facilitates decision making by providing data and information to internal and external stakeholders. Students learn that accounting is an integral part of all business activities.

Legal Aspects of Business

12th Grade

The Legal Aspects of Business course provides a solid understanding of why ethics is important in every profession. After an introduction to several philosophies that inform ethics today, students explore the characteristics of an ethical professional.
