Frequent Questions

What does AOD mean?

AOD stands for Always On Display. This is a feature available on many modern phones that allows you to keep some information displayed even when you turn off the screen.

Basically, AOD Manager is a tool to toggle the always on display depending on triggers, like notification or when your device is charging.

How does AOD Manager impact my device's battery life?

In opposition to other similar apps adding an overlay to replicate the always on display, AOD Manager uses the system's default always on display. To watch for notifications or charging mode, AOD Manager uses basic processes, with limited power usage.

The main impact on battery comes from the always on display itself. However, battery drain is still very limited, even more if your device has an AMOLED screen. Anyway, thanks to AOD Manager, the AOD is enabled only when you need it!

Although I have not encountered any issue about battery life while having it running all the time, if you get such problem, please let me know.

Why does AOD Manager require a special permission?

Unlike other similar apps that create an always on display and therefore only require the permission to create an overlay, AOD Manager uses your device's always on display. However, this is not possible to toggle it without the WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission, hence the setup. This permission is only used for this purpose.

Inside of the app, to be able to use all features, you can grant AOD Manager access to your notifications, as well as allow it to send notifications. Other than that, AOD Manager needs a permission to start when you turn on your device.

Should I keep the tools I used for setup installed?

Once setup is complete, you can uninstall ADB or Shizuku (depending on the method you use). You can also disable Developer Options in system settings.

However, you will need these tools back if you clear the app data or after reinstalling AOD Manager.

Is my device compatible?

To be able to use AOD Manager, your Android device must have an always on display. Moreover, it must run Android 12 or later.

AOD Manager has been tested mainly on Google Pixel phones, which does not mean it will not work on other devices. If AOD Manager does not work properly or crashes on your device, please contact me.

What does the Force AOD Refresh option do?

In some cases, notifications may be automatically removed by the apps that sent them, e.g. when you read the message on another device or the sender has removed their message. In this case, AOD Manager will ask to turn off the always on display, but it will actually only be applied the next time you turn on your screen. To fix that, AOD Manager can send a temporary notification that will do the refreshing for you. This notification is immediately dismissed.

This option must be activated to use the Auto Turn Off feature from Charging Mode.

It is highly recommended to enable this option to get the most out of AOD Manager.
